Set in the heart of Northumberland, The Alnwick Garden is one of the region’s most popular attractions, welcoming visitors of all ages to explore its stunning landscapes and plant varieties, interactive water features, and exciting seasonal events.
The Alnwick Garden is one of the world’s most ambitious new gardens. The Duchess of Northumberland’s vision for a forgotten plot is now a truly 21st century experience full of imagination, inspiration and fun. Designed by Jacques and Peter Wirtz, The Garden is a wonderful combination of spaces, themes, quirkiness and play.
At its heart is the spectacular Grand Cascade, a striking centrepiece of flowing water and perfectly timed fountains. You’ll also find the elegant Rose Garden, a tranquil Serpent Garden filled with interactive water sculptures, and a mix of contemporary structures and green spaces that invite exploration at every turn.
One of the most talked-about features of The Alnwick Garden is The Poison Garden. Hidden behind locked gates and entered only on guided tours, this fascinating space is home to over 100 toxic, intoxicating, and narcotic plants from around the world. Visitors are guided through a thrilling and educational experience, where they can hear tales of the darker, more mysterious side of horticulture. These guided tours are included with entry to The Alnwick Garden and last around 20 minutes.
The Garden is also home to the world’s largest Japanese Cherry Orchard, an extraordinary feature that captivates visitors in every season. In spring, the orchard comes alive with an unforgettable display of 326 Taihaku cherry trees. You can sit within the orchard’s swinging chairs to take in the breathtaking canopy of white spring blossoms. In autumn, the same trees transform once again, this time revealing a rich coppery hue as the leaves change in the colder months.
The Alnwick Garden is fully committed to being inclusive and accessible. Visitors will find step-free paths, accessible toilets, and mobility scooter hire available on-site. Whether you are visiting with young children, older family members, or someone with additional mobility needs, The Garden is designed to ensure everyone can enjoy it comfortably.
The Alnwick Garden hosts a wide range of events throughout the year, from our Winter Lights and live performances to family workshops, food markets, and themed festivals. There is always something new to see, so it’s well worth checking the events calendar before you visit.
If you prefer a bit of flexibility when planning your trip, the Flexi Ticket is a great option. It allows you to reschedule your visit via telephone, email or livechat, giving you peace of mind that your visit date can be moved if life events make your booked date unavailable. (Check out their website for further details). Plus, for standard Garden entry, up to 4 children can go free with each paying adult!
Just a short walk from the main garden is Lilidorei, a separate attraction that has its own listing on the Visit Northumberland website. At Lilidorei, little ones can explore the immersive, magical village, where their imaginations can run wild. Take part in daily activities with the playful Elves and listen to magical stories. Home to the world's largest play structure, Lilidorei is perfect for younger visitors and makes The Alnwick Garden a full family destination.
