Stops worth making
Sitting between York and Edinburgh on the A1 and the East Coast Main Line, Northumberland's towns make natural stops on a touring route, or relaxed bases for a longer stay. Groups can walk the Elizabethan walls of Berwick-upon-Tweed, explore the cobbled streets of Alnwick, or visit the abbey at the heart of Hexham.
Along the coast, quaint fishing villages like Craster and Seahouses offer kippers, fish and chips and boat trips to the Farne Islands, while Wooler and Rothbury make peaceful gateways to the hills.
