2017 is the fourth consecutive year Northumberland has claimed a Silver at the awards, but this year saw added pressure, with established tourism favourite the Lake District also nominated in the category alongside Cornwall, Norfolk and Pembrokeshire & Tenby.
Once again, Cornwall proved unbeatable, but Northumberland placed ahead of the Lake District, who took Bronze.
This fantastic result comes just two weeks after a successful night for Northumberland businesses and attractions in the 2017 North East England Tourism Awards. It means a great deal to the devoted team at Northumberland Tourism, the official destination-marketing organisation for the county, which has just six full-time members of staff.
Jude Leitch, director of Northumberland Tourism, said:
“Four consecutive Silver awards is a huge achievement for Northumberland.
To consistently place as one of the top two counties surely reflects high public regard for a county once nicknamed ‘the hidden gem’. As a small rural destination and relative newcomer to the tourism stage, we’re especially pleased to be in the top three with two of the most popular and long-standing destinations in the UK.
“We hope our Silver award recognition will encourage an even greater portion of the general public to come and see our beautiful county for themselves.
“We want to thank voters, supporters and everyone involved for their overwhelming support throughout the campaign.”
The announcement was made on 29 November at a glamorous Gala Awards ceremony, held in London and attended by more than a thousand travel industry professionals, including representatives from all leisure travel genres and companies.
British Travel Awards’ chief executive Lorraine Barnes Burton said:
“Northumberland is to be congratulated on winning Silver in the Best UK Holiday County/Region. The British Travel Awards is the largest consumer voted awards programme in the world and this year 722,473 votes were cast by the travelling public to determine the winners. To win Silver is truly an accolade and a badge of excellence.”
