Chippendale 300 Exhibition 'The Paxton Style: Neat & Substantially Good'
Exhibition
Berwick-upon-Tweed

To celebrate the tercentenary of Thomas Chippendale's birth, Chippendale 300 is a nationwide celebration of events inspired by the life, work and legacy of Thomas Chippendale, the most famous and influential furniture maker Britain has ever produced. Paxton House holds one of the world's largest collections of Chippendale furniture. Our Nationally Significant collection was awarded Recognition status by Museums Galleries Scotland, on behalf of the Scottish Government, in 2017. The Paxton Style: 'Neat & Substantially Good' was developed by Thomas Chippendale to suit the preferences of two of Paxton’s patrons; Patrick Home (1728 – 1808) and Ninian Home (1732 – 1795).

The collection combines relatively plain but innovative furniture forms with superb quality mahogany cuts and veneers. This personality was concisely defined by Ninian Home in a letter to Chippendale, written from Paxton in June 1789, in which he described what he wanted as ‘neat and substantially good’. The Paxton Style can be seen as a distinct family of furniture within Thomas Chippendale’s repertoire and is quite different from the productions of the elder Chippendale’s earlier career. It features restrained enrichment rather than ostentatious carving and gilding (which can be found in many other large stately homes around Scotland and England). The Paxton Style has enjoyed an enduring legacy that has influenced the design of mahogany furniture that followed.

The exhibition itself is free of charge but you will need to buy a Paxton House Grounds pass which is £5 for adults 16 and over and free for children under 16.

A Once A Year Opportunity With A Unique Herd
Family event

Discover the Undiscovered and Roam the Secret History of the Chillingham Wild Cattle The Chillingham Wild Cattle Association (CWCA) are proud to announce their 2018 Wild Cattle Open Day, a special opportunity for visitors to see parts of the Cattle Park not normally opened to the public.

Taking place on SATURDAY 28TH JULY, The Chillingham Wild Cattle Open Day offers a chance for people to get up close and personal with the Chillingham Wild White Cattle. Through tours and talks, you can learn first-hand about their natural habitat, the history of the cattle park and the family who nurtured them and the continuing contributions the Wild Cattle are making to scientific and environmental studies. The trailer rides will also take you to hidden corners, getting you closer to a variety of flora and fauna in the park.

The Chillingham Wild Cattle are a totally unique herd in that each beast is a clone of the next. With a herd of around 100 cows and bulls, the Chillingham herd are completely wild, with no human intervention other than, very occasionally, humane reasons.

Free to attend, are the series of talks:

Dr John Fletcher, an expert on medieval deer parks, will give a talk on the history of the cattle park and its deer hemmel. Charles Bain Smith, will explain his family connections to Chillingham and his fond memories of Chillingham Castle in the company of his grandmother, Violet, Dowager Countess of Tankerville, and of course, hear the importance of its Wild White Cattle to his family. Based on her own study, researcher in paleoecology, Dr Eline van Asperen, will talk about the impact of the Wild Cattle on vegetation. Her research includes studying the fungi that grows on their dung, the current forefront of many environmental projects, in order to understand and improve successful management of the forests.

Additionally he forms one tenth of a high profile songwriting project, The Company of Players, alongside eight rising stars of the national folk scene. From April 2018 Chris has been taking his dynamic solo live sound on tour of the UK’s Folk Clubs, Arts Centres and Concert Venues.
