Beast from The East couldn't spoil our stay

marionspence, Kirkcaldy
We returned to Doxford Cottages for the same week, nine years later. Last time we stayed in Shellrig but this time we stayed in Fox Cover as my husband's health needs the walk in shower rather than a shower over the bath. We were anxious due to the weather forecasts but Sue encouraged us to come for our Monday to Friday stay despite the weather warnings. We brought extra food, clothes and medication just in case. The snow did begin to fall lightly after our arrival but the cottage was so cosy and luxurious we didn't mind. On the Tuesday morning, the caretaker came to clear our path and fill the bird feeders and a farmer cleared the driveway. We headed out to the A1 and the roads to Alnwick were fairly clear. Alnwick Gardens were open so we stayed for some lunch and then headed back to the cottage. The sun into the conservatory kept it warm as the snow began to fall heavily. When we woke up on the Wednesday it was clear that we were going nowhere. The wifi connection is okay but could be faster but facebook and twitter and the sky tv and dab radio kept us posted with the events out on the roads and at home. We realised it was going to be a stay inside holiday so we read books and magazines and listened to music, we napped and we built a jigsaw. We had stocked the fridge and we weren't hungry. We had the amazing 6ft bed with its cosy duvet and I enjoyed lying watching the snow fall. We were a bit worried on the Thursday as the A1 between Alnwick and Berwick was blocked and Sue couldn't get to us from Alnwick with fresh bread. She did reassure us that we would not be thrown out the cottage on the Friday as the next guests were rearranging due to the weather. We were trapped to the Saturday along with two other couples but Sue stayed in constant touch and did get to us on the Saturday. We finally headed home on the Sunday. It was a snow adventure but thankfully Fox Cover is such a home away from home we managed to cope with being stuck in together.

Easter break

Second time we have visited these excellently equipped cottages. Set in amazing countryside with several beautiful walks on your doorstep we saw an abundance of wildlife including red squirrels. The games room kept our teenage daughters busy playing pool, table tennis and air hockey. A perfect base to explore this stunning part of the world.

Every guest need is thought of

TokyoJimmy, Newcastle
Located in a secluded rural Northumberland setting, Doxford Cottages are a superb place to get away from it all and meet up as a group of family or friends as we did. The price we paid for a long weekend was very reasonable compared to other properties in the area. We booked one of the larger properties, the Carriage House, which was a four bedroom (although we only used three) 'cottage', but the accommodation was huge. On the ground door is a large kitchen/dining room, complete with table and chairs you can fit ten people around. The kitchen has every utensil and gadget you could want, with lots of glasses, mugs, pots, pans and a modern electric cooker/ oven and a huge fridge freezer. The kitchen is so well equipped you could bake if you wanted to. There is excellent heating, which we needed due to the snow and gales we experienced during our stay, plus dishwasher and washer/dryer. There is a large hallway with plenty of space for coats, shoes, bags etc., a small toilet and a huge living area with lots of comfortable chairs, huge TV with satellite channels, books, stereo and DVD player. You can borrow DVDs if you want them. The free wifi is good. There was a log burning stove with complimentary wood from a store outside. Upstairs were three large bedrooms, two doubles en suite, one room with two singles, (the other bedroom we did not use so cannot comment on as it was locked) and a bathroom. The bedroom I stayed in was very comfortable, with two wardrobes, dressing table, a nice shower with complimentary toiletries. The only slight downsides I had to my stay was the TV in the bedroom did not seem to work and there was no extractor fan in the bathroom so it steamed up quickly. The decoration throughout was tasteful and of a very high standard. There was lots of information on the local area, walks etc. and a binder with all the instructions for the house. The Doxford Hall Hotel is next door, and local sights like Craster, Dunstanburgh, Bamburgh and Alnwick just a short drive away. The immediate area is full of wildlife and lovely countryside, from open fields to woods. If you have children there is a play area and field right outside the cottages that they can play in. If the weather is bad there is an on site games room. Barbeques are available if the weather is nice. There is more than enough parking. I would happily stay at Doxford Cottages again. Every need of the guest is thought of and we wanted for nothing for the long weekend we stayed there. An excellent experience.

Really comfortable accommodation

Sheila G, Dublin, Ireland
We had a great week staying in the Carriage house at Doxford Cottages. This is a really spacious house with every possible comfort. We also really appreciated the lovely welcoming touches of a bottle of wine, honey and milk. The location is very quiet and rural but not far by car from lots of villages and towns.

Faultless accomodation

HRM135, Leeds, United Kingdom
The only complaint - Sky Sports 2 had poor reception. That's it. Everything else was above the standard of just about every other holiday rental I have stayed in anywhere. Really well appointed, spacious and situated this is the perfect base to explore the Northumberland coast or stay in or use the facilities in the adjacent Doxford Hall Hotel. We stayed in the Doxford House which can comfortably cater for 8 people, large kitchen dining area and a beautiful terrace with access to the adjacent boating lake. A bit of luxury 5 minutes form Seahouses / Newton by the Sea. Top stuff.
