Overview

Chillingham Castle offers holidaymakers the rare experience of staying in a true medieval fortress.

Holiday here at any time of year, with just one person, a couple or a family/group in this totally original and unspoiled medieval castle.  It is different, intriguingly beautiful and perfectly comfortable too, with plenty of interest in the region.

There are 8 self catering lets of varying sizes.

Ghost hunt

kimr132019,
Friends took me for a birthday treat. Mark was a great host. Knew loads about history and really looked after us. Try to be sceptical but there was a lot of activity that freaked us out. Friends room photos and we could see a cloacked figure in one that didn't appear on a competitive photo. Still trying to find a rational explanation to reassure it's all not real. Good luck Mark in locking up alone in the future and thanks for a fab hunt.

Royal Treatment

Had a beautiful weekend at Chillingham staying in the Grey Apartment. The Architecture, the gardens and the history of the place are awe-inspiring. I can truly appreciate the labour of love Sir Humphry has given to rebuilding this fascinating place He and Lady Wakefield have given the castle a new life and it is a lovely family home once again. Such wonderful hosts. Meeting Lady Wakefield in the garden was the highlight of our trip. Alan, the groundskeeper, and Jim also took really good care of us. Jim gave us a very informative tour of the castle which made our trip all the more meaningful. We didn't see any ghosts but staying in the castle overnight was very atmospheric. If there are any ghosts they are friendly ghosts as I felt very welcome and comfortable our entire stay. Hope to return one day.

Not for the faint hearted

Stayed in guard room , take lightable logs u can get these at home bargains £1 each makes starting the log burners a breeze and an electric blanket life savers as temperature can drop but actually place was toasty pretty quickly , was watched over by a soldier with a beard as I slept over bathroom door ,at no time did I feel uncomfortable ,castle well felt uncomfortable in some rooms but it is a fantastic castle .

Horrendous

Griffinpuffin,
So me and my partner booked up and paid for the ghost tour. We got an email of the confirmation and when we checked the email the date and time was wrong. I emailed and rang up to change it. We had also paid for a hotel near by so we could do the ghost tour as we don’t live locally. I continued to ring and email with no answer or anything from anyone. Absolutely disgusting when you’ve paid them money and don’t get a reply or a phone call back. Would not recommend at all!

Chillingham Castle was well worth a visit but not the Tea Rooms.

GnL2518, Morpeth, United Kingdom
Took my four grandchildren for halloween. Was supposed to be a hunt for ghostly things but we were not given a hunt sheet. They enjoyed the Castle and the walk to the Lake as well as the gardens which had been decorated for halloween. They also enjoyed a game of Alice in Wonderland Croquet. Our visit to the tearooms was disastorous and very expensive. It was half-term and they had no children's lunches priced at £4.00 each (WHAT); instead we had to purchase sandwiches at £4.95 + drinks which came to about £6.00 per child. The sandwiches came with Salad which the kids left and us adults (4) ate to ensure it was not wasted. We had two sandwiches between us and two rather stale cheese scones which when cut into shot off into all directions. Tea was £1.80 per person so for three of use we got one pot costing £5.40 and one adult had a cup of coffee which again was at least £1.80. Certainly not value for money and not as anticipated in previous reviews. I don't think we will be visiting again but if we did a picnic will be in order although there is no picnic tables that we could see.
