Overview

Chillingham Castle offers holidaymakers the rare experience of staying in a true medieval fortress.

Holiday here at any time of year, with just one person, a couple or a family/group in this totally original and unspoiled medieval castle.  It is different, intriguingly beautiful and perfectly comfortable too, with plenty of interest in the region.

There are 8 self catering lets of varying sizes.

Chillingham Castle was well worth a visit but not the Tea Rooms.

GnL2518, Morpeth, United Kingdom
Took my four grandchildren for halloween. Was supposed to be a hunt for ghostly things but we were not given a hunt sheet. They enjoyed the Castle and the walk to the Lake as well as the gardens which had been decorated for halloween. They also enjoyed a game of Alice in Wonderland Croquet. Our visit to the tearooms was disastorous and very expensive. It was half-term and they had no children's lunches priced at £4.00 each (WHAT); instead we had to purchase sandwiches at £4.95 + drinks which came to about £6.00 per child. The sandwiches came with Salad which the kids left and us adults (4) ate to ensure it was not wasted. We had two sandwiches between us and two rather stale cheese scones which when cut into shot off into all directions. Tea was £1.80 per person so for three of use we got one pot costing £5.40 and one adult had a cup of coffee which again was at least £1.80. Certainly not value for money and not as anticipated in previous reviews. I don't think we will be visiting again but if we did a picnic will be in order although there is no picnic tables that we could see.

Great castle and gardens

Sal347, Harrogate, United Kingdom
Really interesting castle, with plenty to see it has a lovely tea room with a roaring fire, The gardens and lakes were gorgeous to walk around as it was such a sunny day. The castle is 13th century and full of history. Easy to spend an afternoon there.

A quirky castle

J-J2030, Lancefield, Australia
One of the more unusual castles we've visited. Apparently it fell into serious disrepair after WW2, then was purchased by Sir Humphrey Wakefield known as a "legendary restorer". The rooms now contain tapestries, paintings, furniture and mountains of what we can only describe as "stuff" which is displayed randomly. On the other hand, some rooms, such as the dungeon, contain fascinating historical artifacts and have a consistency of presentation. The whole experience is quirky and leaves one wanting to return when the restoration is complete.

Worth a Visit, better yet stay overnight

kilchurncastle, Arvada, Colorado
Chillingham has quite a bit of history and has been lovingly restored. There are several rooms to see , including the torture chamber ! If you are a hardy soul and not afraid of the spirits then I do recommend that you book for an overnight stay . We stayed in the Grey Apartment and had a lovely time exploring the castle and it's grounds, also we had a ghost walk which proved eventful. If you stay overnight you must supply your own food and drink, dishes and cutlery are furnished. Also don't forget to see the Wild Cattle !

Enjoyable and wacky day out!

JustMeLauren, Newcastle upon Tyne, United Kingdom
Myself, boyfriend and little brother came here - very enjoyable with some weird and eccentric things on display. The dungeon is possibly my favourite, as i quite enjoy gore and learning about the past torture regimes. Hopefully will visit the cattle next time - and the garden is spectacular!
