Overview

Chillingham Castle offers holidaymakers the rare experience of staying in a true medieval fortress.

Holiday here at any time of year, with just one person, a couple or a family/group in this totally original and unspoiled medieval castle.  It is different, intriguingly beautiful and perfectly comfortable too, with plenty of interest in the region.

There are 8 self catering lets of varying sizes.

Excellent experience all round.

dejacks1971,
I had my doubts after reading some negative reviews about the Appartment, however I am so pleased we didn't listen. We stayed in the Courtyard Appartment which was huge. Warm and traditional in keeping with the castle. Fully equipped kitchen and spottlessly clean. The ghost tour is a must (especially if you do a guided tour during the day and get to know the history first). Graham and Jill were our hosts and we couldn't have asked for any more. Brilliant isn't in it. Can't wait to go back.

Brace Yourself

Where to start? This was full strength in every way! Castle. A remarkable castle, rescued from near ruin, rich in history with much of national significance washing through its doors up to C16th. It would be enough just to soak up the castle with a simple history without all the rest....read on. Tea Room. Warm from a crackling, huge, open fire. Nice lunch pleasantly served. Chapel. Just 300m away is a superb C12th chapel. Go and marvel, the medieval world in its magnificence. Collection. Essentially the interior is full of eclectic, poorly curated items most of which have little (tenuous or nothing) to do with the castle. Fascinating if you are a 'Salvage Hunter', 'Bargain Hunter' or just a fellow compulsive hoarder. Dungeons and Dragons. Childish, halloween pumpkinitus nonsense. Gardens. Lovely. The owner is to be congratulated and truly admired for rescuing this historic gem, the castle. Sadly, one is crushed with the constant need to be told about the owner and his wife's families and their many connections. We were impressed by neither this, nor his 'collection' or the view from his world; Eton, Oxbridge etc. The guide book is a fascinating insight....jumbled, repetitive but great value and terrific entertainment. Please go and step into another world. Be prepared for a full and rich experience that will keep thinking for hours afterwards.

A hidden gem

Linda B, Southampton, United Kingdom
A visit to Chillingham Castle will not disappoint. It is crammed full with items of historic interest. It is more like a museum that just the usual castle. Children will enjoy the fact there is not a DO NOT TOUCH policy as long as they are careful and respectful. The torture chamber will not disappoint older children who enjoy gory details. The tea room which was once the minstrels gallery is a delight. We thoroughly enjoyed our visit.

Fabulous place

Laura C,
We have stayed at chillingham castle a number of times now! We have always had the most fun and interesting visits! Graham and his wife Jill are very hospitable and really make it welcoming! They are very informed and clearly love what they do! Graham hosted our ghost tour.. which I in particular really enjoyed! We are returning to the castle in December this year and we will be joining Graham again for another ghost tour and staying over night in the landseer apartment! Really looking forward to it!!

Lovely quirky haunted castle

1963Richard, Doncaster, United Kingdom
Went to visit in August this year on a very wet grey looking day. Once inside we went straight to the tea rooms where a roaring log fire was burning and had a cups. We then wandered around the castle by ourselves. I will say it was a little bit disappointing as there were very few guides around to explain some of the artefacts and stories that could have been told. There certainly wasn't any structure to the way rooms and their belongings were put together, like I said very quirky!! The lady on the front desk could have been a little bit more welcoming and accommodating with regards to letting us in 3 minutes before 12, as I said earlier it was a very wet day outside but she insisted on keeping quite a number of people waiting until 12 on the dot before letting anyone in? Spoils it a little bit to be honest.
