Overview

Chillingham Castle offers holidaymakers the rare experience of staying in a true medieval fortress.

Holiday here at any time of year, with just one person, a couple or a family/group in this totally original and unspoiled medieval castle.  It is different, intriguingly beautiful and perfectly comfortable too, with plenty of interest in the region.

There are 8 self catering lets of varying sizes.

Very interesting

Sarah8276,
This castle is a great place to visit. A bit of a different feel to other castles, packed with lots of unusual but interesting items. A good place for people who are interested in the paranormal. Has a lovely cafe with an open fire. The grounds are lovely to walk around.

Strange experience beautiful gardens

Bluerobin59, Warrington, United Kingdom
This castle costs around £8-9 depending on age and whether you have 10% discount voucher which is only valid for one ! Whether you could take four and pay individually not sure !! Seems petty either way . They seem to need the money for the upkeep as it’s not National Trust. It’s a mish mash of family memorabilia and history. It’s very run down in parts and hard to differentiate what is genuine and what is there for effect. Some impressive historical details like the original license to put crenellations on the house and make it a castle in about 1355 . There are a lot of artefacts in a so called museum which seem political in character and include disapproving of a family member ! There is a strange chapel and a tea room serving large pots of tea . The strangest part is the torture chamber with horrible torture artefacts and the nicest part is the side garden which is accessible through a shop. There is a considerable amount of discussion of ghosts and ghost tours are available! Seems like the ghosts are helping fund the renovation!!

Love History.

Julie N,
Stayed over for two nights - toured the Castle. Absolutely loved it - the Castle oozes history. We liked that it wasnt all "sumptuous" and that its crammed with Sir Humphry Wakefield's very varied collections. Theres definitely a haunted feel to the place and we loved that the Castle is steeped in so much history - you really do feel like you are touching the past!!

Evening ghost tour

Elaine M, Manchester, United Kingdom
We visited Chillingham Castle for an evening ghost tour, starting at 9pm. The castle has appeared on TV a number of occasions, including Scariest Places on Earth and I have wanted to visit ever since. The ghost tours do not happen too regularly in the week so we were lucky to be staying on the area. This tour does not involve actors, rather a 'serious' tour. The guide, Andy, was excellent and told many stories of people who have experienced ghostly encounters, interspersed with the rather grisly history of the castle. It was excellent, and I would recommend very highly. Take a torch!

Amazing Castle

tigsnz, Hamilton, New Zealand
This is our third visit to this fantastic castle. We came here in the early 80s when it was derelict and too see it now is amazing, a credit to Lord and Lady Wakefield for saving this historical part of history, especially to the standard it is today. It's a privilege to have the opportunity to stay in this authentic castle that has been restored with such passion. The caretaker and his wife along with all the staff were friendly, helpful and nothing was a problem. To top it off as we left we had the pleasure of meeting Lord Wakefield and had a chat about the Grey and Wakefield's influence in the very early days of New Zealand. We had no uninvited visitors in the night so I'm guessing the ghosts were happy with us staying. We stayed in the lookout apartment which has stunning views, and a rather challenging stair case but this just added to the character of the Castle. Thanks again for everything that Chillingham has to offer we will be back I'm sure.
