Overview

Chillingham Castle offers holidaymakers the rare experience of staying in a true medieval fortress.

Holiday here at any time of year, with just one person, a couple or a family/group in this totally original and unspoiled medieval castle.  It is different, intriguingly beautiful and perfectly comfortable too, with plenty of interest in the region.

There are 8 self catering lets of varying sizes.

Disappointing.

The castle was quite dissapointing as castles go.As far as we could see it was rooms filled with various odds and ends of random antiques collected by Sir Wakefield.Even Mick Jagger`s bath(???)The room person did try to explain its presence in the castle, but dissapointment had already set in.It really was a collection of bits and pieces and very poor maintence in areas such as stair wells.Very little in the way of historical content, despite its past history.

Old Curiosity Shop

Absolutely wacky. Well worth the entrance fee. All the staff were brilliant and obviously love working there and very proud of the exhibits and the owners Lord and Lady Wakefield, who actually live on site. Met Lady Catherine while she was doing some weeding and had a lovely chat. I can honestly say I have never seen a more eclectic mix of exhibits. Some random collections from everywhere, and the history of the building is fascinating. The guides/staff are willing to tell you all about it. The tea room is nice but a bit pricey. We missed seeing the cattle but will probably return for another visit as so much to see. Top tip buy the guide booklet written by the Lord himself.

Save your money!

When we arrived, we parked in the car park & then followed the signs to the castle via the ‘woodland walk’. After tramping around in what seemed like circles on winding, wet & very muddy tracks, we finally emerged from what was actually an extremely small bit of woodland made to seem a lot bigger by the serpentine meanderings of the track we were following. My temper, already frayed after our woodland walk adventures, was at boiling point by the time we exited the castle 20 mins later(I couldn’t get out of there fast enough!) & nearly £20 lighter in the pocket. Each room we stumbled into was dark, filthy & stuffed to the rafters with items that could have been absolute gems or just absolute rubbish. A lot of it should probably have been disposed of 2 centuries previously! Anything fabric (curtains, chairs, bedding etc.) was simply rotting. We passed one window recess piled with what looked like very old paper records held in place by a helmet of some description along with various other bits & pieces of detritus and the remains of some electrical plastic & wiring. The website warns the visitor about the spiral staircases & uneven floors for those with mobility problems, however, some of the staircases did not even have a rope or grab rail & were in darkness. Chillingham Castle has the potential to be an amazing visitor attraction in the right hands but, as it stands, the impression we were left with was that the family had simply dumped absolutely every bit of the family history, treasure or rubbish, into every available nook & cranny, opened the doors to visitors and then left the whole lot to rot where it lies.

Amazing experinece

What a fantastic night away. We stayed in the lookout apartment there was 5 of us and we did the ghost tour absolutely fantastic and would absolutely recommend. Graham and Gill were fab hosts for the tour and thanks so much for looking after me when I was overcome with emotion. Their knowledge is amazing and you can tell they love the castle and their jobs. To hear all the history of what happened is fascinating and I am so grateful for the experience, thanks to you and the ghostly hosts who let us in and made us welcome. This is the only photo I got as my flash would not work!

Amazing experience

nicolajnpu,
My fiance and I had a one night stay in the tower at chillingham castle, very freindly staff and very authentic throughout, really eerie and spooky, accomodation was really good had everything you need, we went on the ghost tour and it was really informative and spooky, In my opinion it is haunted as some bazaar experiences were had. We would highly recommend a visit.
