Brunton, Alnwick, Northumberland, NE66 3HQ

Brunton House and the eight cottages are described as ‘the best holiday location’ by guests. The setting, on an organic farm, two miles from beautiful, sandy Beadnell Bay is a fabulous point from which to explore Northumberland. The castles, coast and Cheviot hills are all very close and Alnwick is only 8 miles away, with Alnmouth station on the East Coast mainline just 20 minutes’ drive, and very easy access to the A1. Brunton is positioned between the ancient castles of Bamburgh and Dunstanburgh.

There are a variety of properties, from one-bedroom cottages to the wonderful eight-bedroom Brunton House.  They are all close enough to each other to walk to, and the beautifully renovated Blacksmith’s, in the centre, allows groups of up to 36 to all dine together, with its commercial kitchen and stunning dining room. Families can all stay under one roof in Brunton House, which sleeps and seats 16 in wonderful surroundings, or larger gatherings and reunions can spread out into the nearby cottages.

“We have stayed in many beautiful cottages all over the country but this is just extra special.”

“Of all the places we have been to we have never stayed anywhere which is close to the high standards and quality of Brunton cottages.”

The walks around the farm, to the lake and out across the fields give guests the opportunity to forget about the car and enjoy the wildlife and open scenery. Brunton is the ideal place to bring dogs, who are welcome in six of the properties, with proper space for them to dry off. Famous Bamburgh beach is just up the coast, only 10 miles away, and Craster, and the sandy bays of Embleton and Beadnell, are even closer, just 5 minutes drive.  The Farne Island boat trips can be taken from nearby Seahouses (8 miles) or guests can marvel at driving over the causeway to Holy Island at low tide.

The properties have been graded 5* Gold by VisitEngland and in 2023 won a prestigious ROSE award for ‘service excellence’. They are beautifully decorated and each is very distinct, making it feel unique, whichever property is chosen. There are log burning stoves in all of the properties and plenty of logs available to refill the baskets. Meanwhile the rooms are toasty warm from the sustainable biomass heating, which uses wood chip from the trees on Brunton estate. On arrival a generous welcome basket of locally sourced goods, including honey, tea, coffee, bread, milk and fruit is always appreciated. Brunton cottages are also very well supplied with toiletries, cleaning products and fluffy white towels. Nearly every bedroom has zip and link beds, which allows them to be twins or double.

Brunton has plenty of space to park, with electric charging points available, and because it is at a dead end it is a very tranquil spot, with the Brunton Burn running through and organic sheep and Aberdeen Angus cattle grazing across some fields.

There are excellent pubs and restaurants, with great reputations, very close by - the famous Ship Inn at Low Newton, the scenic Jolly Fisherman at Craster and the renowned Potted Lobster at Bamburgh. Advice on caterers is available for special occasions and praise is so often left by guests for all the help given before-hand and in the information files.
