Overview

If you are looking for a large holiday house for a group or an extended family, Brunton House can sleep up to 16 guests, with fabulous entertaining space and generous bedrooms that are all en-suite. Our other holiday cottages, Stable Cottage, Mill Race and Brunton Burn, sleep six, four and two respectively, and have each been graded 5 Stars Gold by Visit England.

A self-catering family holiday at Brunton House and Holiday Cottages places you in a superb spot for visiting all of Northumberland's famous attractions, including Alnwick Castle, Alnwick Garden, Bamburgh Castle, Cragside, Hadrian's Wall and the Holy Island of Lindisfarne, as well as Northumberland National Park and many others. Whether travelling south from the Scottish Borders or north from Newcastle, there is easy access from the A1.

Brunton and the Fallodon Estate

Brunton House is set within its own private and beautifully-maintained mature gardens on an organic farm in the middle of the 2,500 acre Fallodon Estate, between Alnwick and Bamburgh, on the edge of the Northumberland Coast Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB).

The estate is the former home of Prime Minister Charles Grey and Foreign Secretary and ornithologist Sir Edward Grey, and has an impressive history. Guests are welcome to make use of the estate, which boasts an abundance of wildlife, including red squirrels, deer, otters, and a variety of birdlife. The estate provides fabulous walks, excellent cycling on quiet roads, and fishing on a stocked trout lake. Guests can bring their own horses to ride on the many bridle paths and the beaches. The original stables are behind Brunton House and paddocks are available close by.

For larger groups wishing to holiday together and maintain a higher degree of privacy, Stable Cottage (sleeps 6), Mill Race (sleeps 4) and Brunton Burn (sleeps 2) are also available to let nearby.

Brunton House

The extensive renovations to the house have been carefully designed with large groups in mind, making the house ideally suited for memorable family get-togethers, special occasions and sporting parties. There is fabulous entertaining space, including a dining room seating 16, an elegant drawing room, and an atmospheric hall ideal for pre-dinner drinks or playing games, in addition to a games room and snug / TV room for guests to play pool or table football, find a quiet spot to work, curl up with a film, or relax with a good book.

The elegant interior of Brunton House is light, bright and incredibly spacious. Superb designer fabrics ensure each room has its own individual charm, with a seamless fusion of classic antique and contemporary items, original artworks, quirky objets d'art, and an extensive library of books dotted around the house. All mod-cons are provided, including good Wi-Fi throughout the house, i-docks, a large TV with Sky in the snug, and additional TVs with Freeview and built-in DVD players in the drawing room and every bedroom. Eight individually-designed bedrooms and seven luxurious bathrooms provide superb boutique-hotel-style sleeping accommodation.

The estate is well set up to cater for family and group bookings.

Ground Floor Accommodation

Bedrooms and Bathrooms

The fabulous individually-themed bedrooms at Brunton House comprise three with super-king-size beds and five with zip-and-link beds, which can be configured either as super-king-size or twins. Each of the bedrooms on the first floor has its own en-suite or adjacent bathroom. The two second floor bedrooms share a bathroom, making this floor ideal for a family, teenage children or a nanny. Every bedroom has working shutters, a television with Freeview and DVD, a dressing table, and plenty of storage. There are heated towel rails in each bathroom. Luxurious White Company Egyptian cotton towels and Miller Harris toiletries are provided for all guests.

First Floor Accommodation

Garden and Grounds

Brunton House sits within private and beautifully-maintained mature gardens that include a secluded children's play area. Our guests also have the use of the wider estate extending to some 2,500 acres. There is ample parking, and a stable yard is available for any guests who wish to bring their own horses to ride on the many bridlepaths and local beaches. The stables can also be used for the storage of outdoor kit and for dogs to sleep in during the warmer months.

Stable Cottage

A chic retreat set on an organic farm, with the sound of Brunton Burn babbling at the bottom of the garden. Stable Cottage offers beautifully presented self-catering accommodation that is ideal for families and smaller groups.

Inside, this newly-renovated holiday cottage is cosy yet light, and presented with great attention to detail, with original wooden flooring in the sitting room.

The three bedrooms are immaculately-presented. They have Freeview televisions, ample storage, a stunning super-king sleigh bed in the master bedroom and zip-and-link super-king or twin beds for flexibility in the remaining bedrooms. The floors are carpeted, and there are top quality mattresses, sumptuous feather-and-down pillows and duvets and crisp Egyptian cotton bed linen.

The bathrooms have walk-in showers, as well as a traditional tub in the family bathroom for a good soak. White Company towels and luxurious toiletries are provided.

For our more energetic guests, there is a warm, spacious boot room, which is perfect for dogs, wellies, fishing rods, walking boots and surfboards.

Living Accommodation

    This spacious room has a wood-burning stove, Freeview television, DVD player, Wi-Fi, digital radio, iPod / iPad dock, carefully chosen books and games, and double-aspect windows overlooking the front and back gardens.
  • Kitchen / Dining Area
    The kitchen has a four-plate electric double oven range cooker with griddle, microwave, large integrated refrigerator and dishwasher. Daily essentials are provided, including oil, salt and pepper, tea and coffee, washing-up liquid, bin bags and tea towels / dishcloths. The dining area seats six.
  • Bedroom One
    This has a stunning 6 ft super-king wooden sleigh bed, plus ample storage and Freeview television. It also has an en-suite with shower, basin and wc.
  • Bedroom Two
    This has either a 6 ft super-king bed or two 3 ft single beds, plus ample storage and Freeview television.
  • Bedroom Three
    This also has either a 6 ft super-king bed or two 3 ft single beds, plus ample storage and Freeview television.
  • Family Bathroom
    The family bathroom contains a bath, separate walk-in shower, basin and wc.
  • Utility Room
    This large utility room contains a freezer, washing machine, tumble drier, basin and wc.
  • Boot Room
    With an outside door, this is perfect for dogs and storage.
  • Outdoors
    Outside, with seating to make the most of this sun-trap, there is a south-facing gravel courtyard to the front, and an enclosed garden to the side and rear, with a stream flowing beyond the fence. There is private parking for two cars in the courtyard at the front of the cottage.

Dogs

Two well-behaved dogs are allowed by prior arrangement in the uncarpeted living areas of Stable Cottage. Guests are responsible for ensuring dogs remain within these areas and are not allowed to access upstairs or carpeted rooms or to climb on to furniture. Additional dogs may be allowed, again with our prior permission, to stay in the stables.

Mill Race

Inside, the cottage is light, bright and presented with great attention to detail. The convivial open-plan living area achieves the perfect balance of cosiness and sophistication. There is cosy fireside seating for the cooler months and large French windows that open on to the terrace for sunny days.

The bedrooms, all light, bright and immaculately-presented, boast TVs with Freeview, ample storage, and zip-and-link king-size beds that can be configured as twin beds if preferred. They have top quality mattresses, sumptuous feather and down pillows and duvets, and crisp Egyptian cotton bed linen.

The bathrooms are pristine, with a power shower in one and a traditional tub for a good soak in the other. White Company towels and luxurious toiletries are provided.

Outside, there is an immaculate gravel and grass courtyard to the front and a pretty terrace to the rear; which is a south-facing sun trap with fabulous views across the river to grass fields, the lake and to Beadnell Bay beyond.

    Seating four, the dining area overlooks the river. There is a Clearview wood-burning stove, TV with Freeview, DVD player, Wi-Fi, digital radio, iPod / iPad dock, and carefully chosen books and games.
  • Bedroom One
    This is furnished with a 6 feet double bed (or two 3 feet single beds if preferred), ample storage and TV with Freeview. There is an en-suite shower room with walk-in shower, basin and toilet.
  • Bedroom Two

Brunton Burn

From the immaculate grass and gravel courtyard, steps from the front door lead down into a light, bright and beautifully-presented open-plan kitchen and living space. The overall feel is sophisticated yet homely; elegant neutrals are enlivened with splashes of seaside blues and warm reds from cosy blankets, antique rugs and eye-catching original artwork from local artists. Floor-to-ceiling French windows make the most of fabulous views over the waterfalls and burn.

Back up the steps, the spacious bedroom is beautifully presented with subtle nautical stripes providing a nod to the seaside theme. A fabulously quirky bathroom comes complete with funky pebble tiles and a porthole-style window in the large walk-in shower.

Sumptuous feather and down pillows and duvets, Egyptian cotton bed linen, white Company towels and luxurious toiletries, plus a welcome hamper of local goodies on arrival. provide the finishing touches.

Road directions

The address and post code is Brunton House & Cottages, near Christon Bank, Alnwick, Northumberland, NE66 3HQ.

Whether travelling from the north or the south, exit the A1 at Charlton Mires, five miles north of Alnwick, and take the B6347 towards Christon Bank and Seahouses.

After almost two miles, there is a junction. Keep left, following the sign to Doxford and Chathill (don't turn right on to the B6347).

Drive down this straight road for one mile, then turn right at the T-junction signed to Christon Bank and Newton-by-the-Sea.

After another half mile, you will reach a crossroads. Go straight over, signed to Brunton. The road will pass under a railway bridge.

As you drive into Brunton, which comprises a farm and small hamlet, you will pass cottages on your right and then as the road bends there are cottages on the left.

At the bottom, you will reach a courtyard where you will find Mill Race Cottage and Brunton Burn Cottage overlooking the river. After the courtyard you will find parking on the left-hand side.

For Brunton House, continue along the road, over the bridge and take the middle drive up to the front of the house. Stable Cottage is on the right before you turn to Brunton House.

Bus

You can have some great days out by bus from the nearest stop at Embleton which is reached via a leisurely walk across estate fields. Plan your journey and see some of the places you can visit on the bus route at the Northumberland Coast Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty here
