Putting things right

alunmw, Peterborough, United Kingdom
My wife and I first visited Jesmond Dene for one night in October as part of a birthday treat. Unfortunately there were some problems that meant we had to change room late at night and we ended up in a room with a rather noisy pump-house or similar just outside our window (though not the kind of noise that stops you getting a good night's sleep) and one with a shower rather than the bath we'd hoped for. It wasn't all bad by any means - the house is filled with interesting pictures and sculptures, and the hotel breakfast was superb, and the nearby Jesmond Dene Park was lovely, but the fact was that the trip was not altogether what we'd hoped for. You could say that in a perfectly run hotel problems should never arise. But I think it's sometimes more about how staff deal with problems, and on that score I have nothing to complain about, because we were offered (offered - not grudgingly conceded) a complimentary one night stay with breakfast for our next visit, which we used as part of a two night visit in December. Second time around our stay was everything we had hoped for from our first visit. Our room was in the main house, very quiet, and as clean, comfortable and spacious as anyone could wish. As we were getting a free night we decided we could afford to dine at the hotel, and we didn't regret choosing to do so. Writing this over a month later I have to admit that my memories of the food itself are hazy, but the service was wonderful - attentive and friendly without being obtrusive, making it easy to enjoy a relaxed and unhurried meal. After our meal we lingered in the bar area and enjoyed looking around the room which was filled with interesting things to look at. I don't know Newcastle well, and I've no idea what other hotels it has to offer. I'm not likely to find out any time soon either, because despite the glitches during our first visit I'd have no hesitation in going back to this hotel next time I'm visiting Newcastle with my wife. For me, a good hotel needs to be a building with real character, a place where I feel welcomed. Jesmond Dene House certainly ticks both those boxes. But to be a really fantastic place to stay a hotel also needs to be a great place to do nothing, and on that score this hotel would be hard to beat.

Charming, keep going back...

I have visited Jesmond Dene House 4 times this month, twice for meetings, grabbing a cup of tea and their delicious biscuits. I stayed overnight- rooms are lovely, bed very comfortable, only issue was there wasn't a drinks menu for room service, but staff were very accommodating at recommended something. And I had the festive afternoon tea with a friend, I am the fussiest eater, and they accommodated me well, the cakes were to die for, scones gorgeous and with big sofas and a fire, what more could you wish for...? The hotel is full of elegent charm, staff always friendly, and food and drink delicious.

Main House attraction

DolphinSq, London
Just spent 5 nights at this lovely hotel. I was first given a room in the annex which I wasn't keen on. I was moved the following night into the main house which I preferred. The staff are very professional and helpful. The food was excellent and although the breakfast is £18 extra it is delicious, locally sourced and the freshest eggs ever! I would definitely return but would make sure I was booked into one of the rooms in the main house.

Great reception staff

scjs, Inverness, United Kingdom
Booked in for a night to escape the Xmas pace. Upgraded which was great, room was cold but staff immediately sought to rectify it. Housekeeper was excellent - nothing was too much trouble - same for the receptionist. Grounds a bit scruffy but it was December, shame about the waste ground next to the room so no view unfortunately. Rooms a bit soul less but great showers, comfortable beds and well equipped.

Best Ever

Dorothy T, Newcastle upon Tyne, United Kingdom
My son has been taking myself and his father to Jesmond Dene House for a Christmas night out for the past seven years. We have had good food we have had excellent food but last night was by far the best we have ever had. As my son said it was truely phenomenal and that was only after his starter of pigs cheek and black pudding. Service had to be the best too. Well done to all at Jesmond Dene House and give our thanks to your wonderful chef.
