Dark Sky Stay & Gaze Award

Whatever your taste buds delight in, spoil them rotten at Battlesteads pub, hotel and restaurant in Wark, near Hexham.

Most of the food is either grown on site in the two acre gardens and two polytunnels or sourced from artisan producers within 25 miles of the hotel. And it’s all cooked to order by head chef Eddie Shilton and his team.

Originally built as a farmstead in 1747, Battlesteads is now the greenest hotel in Northumberland with multi-award winning eco credentials. Interested guests can enjoy a tour of the green installations, while others simply enjoy the guilt-free pleasure of great food, locally-brewed beer, organic and biodynamic wines and comfy accommodation – all without the chemicals!

Battlesteads offers three options for an eating experience – a more relaxed affair in the bar area; views of the garden and some wildlife-spotting from the conservatory; or a more formal, intimate experience in the main restaurant with its dark wood furnishings and low lighting.

There is ample parking on site and secure storage for cycles.

Welcomed us and our 7 year old and dog, really friendly staff, Parmesan truffle fries are completely addictive

Good varied menu well prepared

The restaurant is fairly large but I would recommend booking as it gets busy, especially at weekends. The food was well prepared and varied, the Rabbit Casserole was first class as was the Bread and Butter pudding.

Try the taster menu. Well worth it and a wonderful experience. Add wine too for a great evening. Super service too

Beautiful setting but poor service

We were in the area so thought we'd pop in for some lunch. First impressions were "wow". We were sat in the conservatory area looking out over the beautiful garden they have so things were off to a great start. We were shown the lunch menu, which was a limited menu, but both found something we liked the sound of so ordered, along with a couple of drinks which were promptly brought out. I ordered the pulled beef baguette - it did not state it came with anything so I ordered a side of chips as well. It turns out it came with fries - so perhaps either stating that on the menu, or the waiter pointing out it already came with fries would have been nice! I expected the pulled beef to be in a gravy type sauce, but it was in a sweetish sauce which, had I have known, I wouldn't have ordered as I'm not keen on sweet sauces. Nevertheless it was nice enough and reasonably priced. We finished our lunch and herein came the problem as we waited... and waited for the plates to be cleared. There was only maybe 5 or 6 other tables at most, and the staff looked at the plates every time they passed (after 20 minutes we pushed them to the end of the table hoping they'd take the hint!) but didn't clear them. Eventually 35 minutes after we finished eating they cleared the plates. I had planned on getting a desert but decided against it after the poor service as I had no idea how much longer we'd be sitting there! No-one checked back to see if we wanted additional drinks either, which we would have. So a beautiful setting but the service, and description of the food on the menus, needs to be improved.
