100,000 crocuses in bloom at National Trust's Wallington

Wallington house, gardens and estate is a National Trust property in Cambo, Northumberland. Wallington’s 13,000-acre estate was gifted to the National Trust by Sir Charles Philips Trevelyan in 1941 and was home to generations of the unconventional Trevelyan family.

The 100,000 purple crocuses, took the gardening team and 20 volunteers two weeks to plant in Autumn 2015 and cover the 3500m2 lower lawn in the walled garden. For our green-fingered readers, the crocuses are Ruby Giants (Crocus tommasinianus).

Despite the best efforts of the recent Beast from the East, the crocuses have survived the heavy snow and freezing temperatures and are providing another sensational show. They will be in bloom for the next couple of weeks so plan in your trip to Wallington to see them before they are gone for this year. For another reason to visit, 2018 marks the 50th anniversary of Wallington being open to the public as a National Trust property. there is a programme of activities and events taking place from May until October this year to celebrate.
