Today Berwick Visual Arts have officially announced the dates of the Lowry exhibition - 'L. S. Lowry in Berwick and Northumberland' - at the Granary Gallery from 21st June to 21st September 2014.
Lowry is one of the UK’s best loved artists, famous for his industrial scenes and ‘stick men’. It is less well-known that he had a great love for the North-East and was a regular visitor to the area from the 1930’s onwards.
During this period he spent time in Middlesbrough, Sunderland, Newcastle and the North-East coast with his first recorded visit to Berwick-upon-Tweed in 1936. He particularly liked Berwick, including paintings of the town in his first one-man exhibition in London. He drew and painted the town many times over the years, depicting its narrow streets and lanes, Georgian buildings
In June Berwick Visual Arts will present an exhibition of Lowry’s work produced in Berwick, bringing together original works produced by Lowry to the town for the first time. These will be accompanied by other works produced in Northumberland, the wider North-East and his exploration and fascination with the sea.
This exciting exhibition will include loans from Sunderland Museum & Art Gallery, The Lowry Estate, The Lowry, Salford, alongside works held in a number of private collections.
