The National Trust is hosting their first ever Water Festival at Cragside in Rothbury this summer which promises to be better the wetter you get.
Inspired by Lord Armstrong and his fascination with water, Splash Cragside Water Festival is packed with fun summer activities from pond dipping to flume racing and water play. However the star attraction of the festival, which is something the Trust believe would wow Lord Armstrong himself, will be the dancing fountains on Tumbleton Lake.
Kate Hunter, Events Coordinator at Cragside told us:
“Each of the five fountains we are installing on Tumbleton Lake will be choreographed so that dancing jets of water move to music. It promises to be a spectacular display every day of the summer holidays. For those who want to explore further, each of the dances have been inspired by mystical creatures based on historical characters at Cragside. Families can walk around the lake to discover the creatures and the real people behind their stories – we have created it like this so that there’s something for children and something for parents too.”
The fountains have been created by Aquabatics, a company that specialises in magical water effects, who have created water features for places such as Blenheim Palace and for the hit TV show Britain’s Got Talent. Last year they provided the fountain for Cragside’s Electric Estate event.
Martin Allen, Operations Director at Aquabatics said:
“We’re very excited at Aquabatics to be part of this project and having the opportunity to work with the National Trust on a long term installation. Cragside is a beautiful location and the fountains add another dimension to the already stunning scenery.
We’re looking forward to seeing the visitor’s reaction to the feature and hope that everyone enjoys the show. “
In addition to the daily activities and fountain displays at Cragside this summer, there will be water based events throughout the holidays, as Kate explains:
“Cragside is open every day of the summer holidays, even on Mondays when we are usually closed. There will be something to do every day – as well as the lakeside trail we have events taking place throughout the holidays including bush craft, make a home for a water sprite, flume racing, pond dipping and water play, and on the 21 August we’ll have one massive water fight!.”
Splash! Cragside Water Festival takes place until Sunday 2 September. The event has been inspired by Victorian inventor Lord Armstrong whose work was greatly influenced by the power of water. Visitors to Cragside this summer can learn more about Armstrong’s fascinating water based inventions.
