Northumberland National Park Mountain Rescue Team

A national outdoor retailer is sponsoring the 36th Cheviot Challenge, an annual fundraising event taking place on 2 September 2017 in aid of the Northumberland National Park Mountain Rescue Team (NNPMRT).

Cotswold Outdoor, a specialist retailer of outdoor equipment, clothing and accessories is this year’s headline sponsor for NNPMRT’s Cheviot Challenge, and is giving all entrants a 15% discount in store and online. This could be used to purchase equipment needed to take part in the event, comprising a choice of 17 and 22 mile routes.

The Cheviots Challenge event raises around £3k of the £20k needed each year to keep the NNPMRT operational. During 2016 the Team responded to 66 incidents, its busiest year on record.

The event starts and finishes at the Rose & Thistle Inn, Alwinton and is designed as a personal challenge that is accessible to all with a good level of fitness. The NNPMRT will be in strategic places along the routes, to provide encouragement and light refreshments, and to ensure the safe running of the event.

Alison Chalk, Local Marketing Representative at Cotwolds Outdoor, said:

“Completing the Cheviot Challenge myself last year inspired me to encourage Cotswold Outdoors to support NNPMRT and this years event. The NNPMRT are an invaluable organisation within our region and rely solely on fundraising for their functioning. We will be delighted to have a presence at the event on the day, with some of our store staff members gearing themselves up for the challenge itself. We would encourage anyone who loves the hills to get involved too.”

In addition to Cotswold Outdoor, representatives from Merrell (an outdoor footwear manufacturer) will be at the event offering advice and product information.

Ian Nixon, Leader of Northumberland National Park Mountain Rescue Team, said:

“We are delighted to have one of the UK’s most recognisable outdoor specialists support this year’s Cheviot Challenge, which takes in some of England’s most breathtaking scenery. A key part of staying safe in the hills is making sure you are prepared and have the right kit to cope with the environment, and thanks to our friends at Cotswold Outdoor, our participants to this year’s event can purchase new kit at a discount.”

This years Challenge is on Saturday 2nd September, and is open for registration now. To find out more about the Challenge or the Team visit
