Copper Plate Photogravure Exhibition

The Old School Gallery in Alnmouth launches a new programme of exhibitions and workshops with a stunning collection of etchings by a talented young artist, Jack Whitwell, currently in his final year at the University of Newcastle.

Jack is one of the few traditional copper plate photogravure artists in the UK and hopes to gain a place at the Royal College of Art later on this year.

His large scale black and white coastal images are created by taking photographs using a large format film camera and then etching the image onto copper plates using acids. Once printed the results are stunning, atmospheric scenes that record the form, texture and tone of the landscape. Jack is keen to emphasise that his work is about capturing the impermanence of a coastline that is always changing as the sea erodes the land.

On selecting the work of such a young artist gallery owner Dale Maloney remarks, ‘We are always looking for new talent and fresh approaches to capturing the Northumberland coastline so we are delighted Jack has created these works for an exhibition. The pieces are fascinating and well worth seeing. As we have recently joined the national Own Art scheme, customers can now buy art work such as Jack’s and pay it off over ten months, interest free. It’s a great scheme and it makes art works for the home more affordable’

The gallery is also offering a range of printmaking workshops delivered by Northern Print and new for 2018 is a beginners weaving session and an observational sketchbook weekend with artist Kittie Jones. All the details about the workshops can be found on the gallery website and you can book on-line too.
