Overview

The Inn has 18 ensuite bedrooms and is set amongst some of the most breath taking scenery in England, standing in the shadows of Steel Rigg, without doubt one of the most dramatic parts of Hadrian's Wall.  We serve locally produced, homecooked food all day which can be enjoyed in our bar, "Twice Brewed", our restaurant, "Sycamore Gap", or our beer garden.  Please see our website for further details.  Andy and Susan Smith, and the Team look forward to welcoming you to the Inn.

Tired and a bit chaotic - great location, though

Geossica, Glasgow, United Kingdom
I stayed here for one night while walking Hadrian’s Wall. The room was a little tired compared to other hotels in a similar price range. It could do with a bit of a revamp, particularly the bathroom which had an odd smell (damp? Drains?). That said, it was fairly comfortable and is in a great location for weary walkers. I ate an evening meal in the bar. The younger staff could do with earning to smile at and engage with customers. Things felt a bit chaotic and disorganised. The portions are huge. I wouldn’t rave about the food but it was tasty enough and there was plenty of it. Breakfast was even more disorganised. I suspect they were caught on the hop by so many guests descending at the same time. That said, the staff kept their cool, smiled, and took the time to check that guests were happy. The eggs benedict with salmon was tasty.

Some good things, some things come short of satisfaction

Peter_and_Jane_York, North Yorkshire, United Kingdom
Room clean, mattress, pillows and bed really good, nice bathroom with good shower. But the room was very small. We only had small suitcases and there wasn’t room for one let alone two. During the night we had to put a suitcase against the door. And on one side of the bed there was no bedside table. Lack of attention to detail e.g. no glasses in the room. Also at these prices I would expect fresh milk to be available and free biscuits. The open plan bar was very noisy and terribly smelly, not sure why. The beer was excellent. The food wasn’t great, over cooked meat and soggy vegetables. The portions were rather large, overwhelming and lacked finesse. The wine was good and well priced. We were a bit concerned that the staff at breakfast were poorly trained about dietary issues.

A great refuge after a hard day's walk

adrianchance, Bristol
The staff were very helpful and welcoming from the moment I called to book a room, to when we left - borrowing some sellotape for one of our walking boots! (taping it together while the glue dried...). We arrived at 19.45, soaked to the bone after a very wet afternoon's walk. The drying room was much needed! As was the hearty food and good choice of beer brewed in house. The room was a bit small and there was nowhere to hang or put clothes.

For those about to walk

Dean N, Glossop, United Kingdom
After a tough day walking the highways and byways of Hadrian's Wall and the Pennine Way you need a warm up, a cracking pint of real ale and some good old honest food. This pub provided just that. Plenty of room, really friendly patient staff and a landlord who has got it just right. Easy access to walking routes ( Steel Rigg) and also easy car access with loads of parking. A good selection of beers brewed on site. I tried several ( like you do) all top pints. They also have a huge selection of Gins. Most of all, a good laid back atmosphere. TOP PUB!

Twice Brewed over the years...

nextdoorlaura, Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin
Been coming to the "Twicey" for over a decade now. Many changes since it was a modest backpacker's accomodation. The recent renovations look great, all rooms ensuite is nice. Menu is good, if a bit limited and an on site brewery makes the already nice tap line up even better. Great staff, have gotten to know them well. Sometimes the bar gets busy and there is a wait. Rooms a bit small...you can only do so much with a 300 year old country inn. Expect to be back again.
