Charming hotel

bandito912, New York City, New York
Charming hotel, lovely and helpful staff, comfortable rooms, and delicious beer. My room was incredibly tiny, but it was all I really needed in the middle of my Hadrian's Wall path hike. The shower was great -- love the giant bath sheets -- and the bed was incredibly comfortable. The faux fur throw on the bed was a really nice touch to give the room a nice warm feel. I'm a bit perplexed about the rubber trays for your hiking shoes though. If they want you to take off your shoes (which are definitely covered in scat after walking through sheep pastures for days), wouldn't it make sense to have a sign in the lobby and then provide some slippers or flip flops to wear around, rather than hiding the rubber tray all the way in the back of the room where it's the last thing you'll see after you've traipsed around everywhere with dirty shoes?

Good Beer but Poor Ambience

EDCtravel, Richmond-upon-Thames, United Kingdom
Beer very good. But plenty noisy enough and not that relaxing a place after 22 mile walk. Worth dropping in though for a pint. As is a good end point for a leg of the Hadrian’s Wall. They also have 19 rooms should you need somewhere to stay.

Very disappointing - put a downer on a great day

Adam1248, Newcastle upon Tyne, United Kingdom
We came to Hadrian’s Wall for a walk on a very sunny bank holiday Monday. While walking, we came across this pub which looked nice from the outside. We decided to go in for a drink and a quick bite to eat. But I wish we hadn’t! We entered the pub to be greeted by a huge queue at the bar. It appeared to be very understaffed, but we gave it the benefit of the doubt and waited. We eventually got served, ordered food and drinks which were averagely priced (probably the only half-good thing about this pub). After waiting 15 minutes, my friend’s food arrived. However, my meal was still no where to be seen. But it was a bank holiday, so I understood possibly needing to wait longer than usual. We kept waiting. And waiting. More than 45 minutes had gone by and there was still no sign of the food coming out. I went to the bar and politely asked if my food was going to be any longer. The man working on the bar went into the kitchen to find out. He then came out and started asking more questions about my order. It was clear they’d completely forgotten about my food. They asked me more questions about it, which made me feel quite uncomfortable as it was starting to come across that I was at fault for the problem. They eventually tracked down my order, and said they’ll start making it now. I then explained I’ve been waiting nearly an hour, we can’t wait any longer. The man said I’ll make sure you get it as quickly as possible. The food then did arrive shortly after. However, waiting over an hour with no apology or compensation was just not acceptable. The food itself was below average. I had a chicken & bacon burger. The chicken had small bones in it, the bacon was very fatty and overall just very disappointing. Overall, waiting over an hour for poor service and below-average food was not a great way to spend part of my bank-holiday. I genuinely felt robbed. We won’t be returning.

Overall good but...

Having walked Hadrians wall the previous year but not stopped at twice brewed we decided to book a couple of nights away here to try the lovely beer we missed out on and visit vindolanda. The staff were friendly and pleasant. The beer and food were great especially the steak and ale pie which got high praise from my pie loving boyfriend. The room was clean and comfortable however the (quite possibly unnecessary) emergency exit light in the room caused us a bit of a problem. The green indicator light kept my partner awake all of the first night which we tried to overcome by sticking a magazine over it. But then there was a power cut on the second night and the bright white light came on and off sporadically throughout the night, causing us futher disruption to our sleep! I know a power cut can't be helped but maybe they don't need to be in the rooms at all seen as there is only one exit and you can see the hall lighting under the door..? If you struggle to sleep with light in your room make sure you take an eye mask. We really enjoyed our stay but both left feeling really tired rather then refreshed and relaxed. Would recommend for the most part but something needs to be done about the lights.

Thrice Stewed

I agree with the stout supporters. In fact the beer is worth the walk. Our room was facing the brewery and whilst it was newly refurbished it was small and functional but it did have a (pokey) bath. Lots of hot water. Open fire which was great as we'd walked 14 miles to get there in a biting wind. Food was samey for meat eaters but as a veggie I can say the cheese soufflé was (heavy) cheesy and deeply satisfying. Cheese plate was typically Northern and massive. They've got you over a barrel here but at least it's a craft barrel.
