The Queens Head in Rothbury is a traditional old fashioned Inn in the heart of the beautiful Coquet Valley. A landmark in the village since 1780 the pub is centrally placed and within 1 minutes' walk of the river.

On the edge of the National Park and only 30 minutes drive from the Heritage coast, making us an ideal base from which to explore the natural beauty of North Northumberland and the Borders, or if shopping is your pleasure Newcastle is only 40 minutes drive away.

Outdoor pursuits in the area include  fishing, golfing, shooting, walking, climbing and cycling.  The Coquet is justly famous for its trout and salmon fishing, and other rivers are within easy reach. Rothbury has its own 18-hole golf course and there are many more in the area.

We can arrange discounted golfing and fly fishing tuition and we have cycle storage and drying  space for muddy boots. We can also arrange for cycle hire, delivered to the door and hire of all terrain buggies for children.

The hotel has 7 en suite bedrooms (including family rooms), 2 dining rooms, lounge bar and games room. There is a pleasant outdoor seating area and free parking in a private car park.

Children are always welcome and high chairs are provided, cots are available by prior arrangement.

We have a reputation for excellent food and offer a bar menu as well a full a la Carte menu. The Sunday carvery is especially popular and good value for money and if you eat nothing else you must try the bread and butter pudding, or the hot sticky ginger pudding, or the chocolate sponge pudding ...........try them all.

Very good, clean, well run family hotel

Ally S,
I booked two double rooms for two nights for ourselves and friends, and received an excellent deal wit the lady 'Sophie' . Food was very good and nicely presented with a breakfast that lasted me all day. We joined in with the locals on a quiz night and found the atmosphere in the bar was superb. We all would stay there again.

Convenient and good food

We stayed one night at the Queen's Head; the accommodation could do with some tlc and modernisation but was clean and tidy. Lots of stairs! Excellent meal in the dining room, and nice atmosphere in the bar.

Overnight stay with breakfast and evening meal

Unique T,
We felt well looked after and any concerns and wishes were immediately attended to. The building looked a little rundown - some redecorating would help - but it also had loads of character. It was reasonably priced for what was offered; we would go back and recommend it to others. On the night we were there, there was live music in the bar downstairs. We were on the second floor, so this was audible but not a disturbance.

Avoid for accommodation and restaurant meal

This hotel needs a lot of TLC and management of the mainly young, inexperienced and disinterested staff. We booked a meal in the restaurant for the first night, starter was lovely and main ok so we asked to see menu for dessert. Half hour later no one had come back so we gave up. As we went upstairs we noticed the waitress in the bar playing on her phone. I had asked for the Prosecco to drink which was advertised on the board outside on a special deal, but was told it was finished. Strange that the board was still outside the next night. Our room was at the top of the hotel and we had been told beforehand the stairs were steep but that was ok for us. The room was laid out such that you could not use part of the wardrobe easily and most of the hangers were broken anyway. The toilet roll holder was broken, the light pull fell to bits ( my husband fixed it) and the lampshade was balanced on the lamp, Worst part was breakfast, the table clothes were dirty and the waitress quite happily took a dirty table cloth, shook it out, whilst we were eating and put it back on the table. We had to search through cutlery to find some that was clean and on the way out of the breakfast room you pass a bin that is full of discarded old bread and toast. Yuk! Never saw anyone who behaved like management. The village itself is fine and there is a nice Italian restaurant over the road .

Just returned from a 2 night stay to attend a wedding nearby. The hotel is in an excellent location being on the edge of The National Park and probably appeals to those wanting to explore the area and walk. It probably has a good local custom too by providing regular musical entertainment It also seems to have an extensive menu which could attract custom. There seems to be plenty of car parking. However this hotel is not for us. The hotel is very dated and tired especially in most of the public areas. Our room was clean with a large bathroom However it felt sparse with few extras in the bathroom for a 'de luxe' room. On the first night there was no extra toilet roll which fortunately we didn't need. On the second night we realised that the cheap plastic toilet lid was not fitting properly and is probably temporarily fixed on a regular basis. For the first night we had booked a table in advance. Unfortunately there was no booking registered. We agreed to amend our preferred time. However service was very slow and we had to wait for an hour for our meal to arrive. Both meals were not to up to standard. - tough steak and a fish dish from the specials board where the breaded fish looked like carboard! Breakfasts are adequate but nothing exceptional. On our first day fruit consisted of 2 oranges and no effort made to replenish - day 2 much better however. Staff are allowed to smoke outside the rear entrance to the hotel from the car park. On departure there were 4 members of staff smoking and it doesn't make it very pleasant to walk through it and seems quite unprofessional. Overall there seems a lack of hands on management or supervision which means the little extras that can make your stay much more enjoyable aren't there. Guests at the wedding had many good experiences staying locally in other accommodation and were especially complimentary about a number of b & bs providing very good quality accommodation, excellent food and outstanding service. On reflection we should have done the same and also got much better value. Won't be recommending this hotel!
