Overview

This historic 17thC inn is run with an instinctive understanding of its traditions. The stone walls hold old photos of the community; from colliery to smithy, a vital record of its past. The bars are wonderful: brass beer taps glow, anything wooden has been polished to perfection and the clock above the fire keeps perfect time.

The house ales are expertly kept - Timothy Taylors, and local beers from Wylam Brewery. Robin cooks with relish nothing too fancy but more than enough to keep a smile on your face: fresh fish simply cooked, game and mushroom pie and slow roasted Northumberland Lamb. As for Sunday Lunch The Observer readers voted it one of the best in the North.

Bedrooms in the purpose-built annexe and the old hay barn are simple and tidy, not grand but cosy, and you'll get a piping hot breakfast the next morning - accompanied maybe by a view of the sheepdogs bringing the herd in for shearing. This is the glorious Northumberland National Park - no traffic jams, no rush and don't miss the sculpture at Kielder. Kielder Water is the largest man made lake in Europe and has the least light polluted skies.

Try everything from sailing to golfing, nature safaris to working forest visits. Visit the new Observatory, or further a field Northumberland's top tourist attactions: Alnwick Castle and Gardens, Hadrian's Wall and Forts plus countless castles, rolling countryside and miles of rugged coastline. Then hire bikes and cycle round the lake, or saddle up a pony and take to the hills. close to Kielder Water. Fishing, riding and all water sports are nearby, as are the Scottish Borders and Hadrian's Wall.

Good Food and Great Atmosphere

912mcp, Yorkshire, United Kingdom
We turned up without notice two weeks ago and they were very accommodating with everything from advising the best place our Motorhome for our overnight stay. We wandered to the bar for a drink and the atmosphere was brilliant, the pub was spotless, and the staff and locals were very welcoming. Then the good food topped of what was a spur of the moment visit. I can assure you, that our next visit will be planned on any journys we make in that direct in the future.

Great food

Go52625445644,
My wife and I stayed here for one night to break the journey from Scotland to London. The Inn is located in the most gorgeous countryside, completely off the beaten track. The food was absolutely fantastic, good service and comfortable, if somewhat dated room. Worth the extra miles.

Top class

We spent 4 days at the Pheasant inn and found everything fantastic. The accommodation was clean and well decorated, the breakfast was delicious as well as the evening meal . We could not fault the Pheasant and would recommend this as a great place to stay.

Stayed here one night 6th November 2018, excellent hotel staff very friendly, rooms good standard. Breakfast was great plenty of variety, cooked breakfast couldn’t be faulted. Nice area for walks or a visit to the Keilder observatory for fantastic views of the stars providing there is no cloud cover

A mixed bag

davidjS9640TO,
We stayed here for two nights, the location is remote which is what we wanted, the inn is traditional, warm and comfy, the staff, all of them were lovely and welcoming. We did since long walks and on return we ate in front of an open fire, really, really good hearty food with good beer and wine, just what was needed. We relay enjoyed our stay but we would have only two negatives, our bedroom was very small in itself not an issue but the bed was way way too small, I guess a 4' 6'' size, just not good enough and to be honest, the decor really needs updating. With a larger bed, you could get one in, and updated decor it would have been perfect. The owner did try and sort a room with a larger bed bed they were very busy, we really appriciated that, he was very good host
