Spot on pub

We stayed 2 nights here on a local friends recommendation. We could not be happier. Friendly owners who totally renovated about a year ago. Everything slick and span and works well but still retains a nice “local” atmosphere.

top spot in the middle of nowhere

We stayed here as a mid point during our 48hr of Hadrians wall. Ian was super helpful during the booking process. They were able to serve us food at 9pm and it was delicious, set up breakfast for us at 5:30am and made great pack lunches, even arranged a minibus for us all at 6am. The rooms were fantastic, just a shame it was such a fleeting visit. Would certainly recommend this place!

Excellent hospitality

My wife and I stayed two nights in this hotel. They have just been through a refurbishment and everything is modern and new. We stayed in their smallest room. The mirror was heated so it didnt steam up. Water pressure was good. The steak I had on Saturday night was perfection. My wife enjoyed her fish. The breakfasts were good. They dont serve dinner on Sunday nights but they made sure we were fed by supplying takeaway menus. It was really well situated for seeing Hadrians Wall and Vindolanda was very close. They had great real ales and ciders and a good selection of spirits. The staff were really friendly and helpful.

Re-furbished

A perfect location for Vindolanda and Hadrian’s Wall, a short walk away if you find the path (it’s immediately next to the hotel through the pottery). The accommodation, pub and grub is all as good as you’d expect from people who are making an effort and spending their money on improvements (they should expect a return). The multi national clientele all appeared satisfied, I felt proud.

Well it’s finally happened!

I’ve been visiting the Bowes for well over 40 years and always felt it was an under- achiever? Well that’s no longer the case as someone had dug deep into their pockets and brought the accommodation up to modern spec! Location Just off the A69 and in the heart of Roman Wall Country. There is a small area for public parking adjacent to the hotel. The bus stop is a stones throw away (685 to Carlisle or Newcastle-upon-Tyne every hour.) Accommodation The bar has been divided into areas and you could have pockets of diners. There is a decking area outside the front. The bar are has a crisp clean feeling. The bedrooms have also been revamped. Nice to see the prices displayed in bold on the walls too! The gents were spotless and you could smell the cleaning agents as you went down the corridor. The toilets were spotless and even has fragranced diffusers. The notice board in the corridor gives a wealth of information. Staff( three) Polite, friendly and helpful and couldn’t do enough for you. Evidenced by guests going out of their way to thank staff on their way out. Sure sign of a well run and Managed business noticed by the ambience enjoyed by more than 30 diners. Menu Limited menu with four dishes and fish and chips. Our visit was a Friday and it was the Pensioners menu. We had fish and chips (x2) and fish pie. £7 per dish and whilst not the biggest portions, the food tasted superb. Ice cream at £4.95 was equally tasty and one dish was served with apple, rhubarb and apple peel. Drinks £3.60 for Revisionist Craft lager and £4.00 for Estrella. £1.20 for a can of coke-seemingly no wishy washy draught come on offer ! Summary Well what a transformation and this is now a little gem. Full marks to the Owner for investing in the business and you’d have to go a long way to equal the value we had this week. More visits are a certainty and the five stars awarded were a formality
