A very warm welcome, good accommodation and generous cooking

Christopher B, St. Albans, United Kingdom
We stayed here for 4 nights. The rooms are newly built, spacious and well-planned. It is very handy having the inn next door, for breakfast and dinner (or lunch if you are around during the day). The inn has a good rural location, very handy for places like Hexham and Hadrian's Wall, and an easy drive into Newcastle; near but sheltered from the A66; and sandwiched between the South Tyne river and the Newcastle-Carlisle railway line (which is, however, barely noticeable). The welcome was very warm, though the regular staff were considerably more clued-up than some of the temporary (but perfectly pleasant) restaurant servers. The range of food on the menu was astonishing and the portions were very generous. The cooked breakfast was good too. Our only (small) complaint was that the cleaning staff failed to notice and deal with a very noticeable infestation of tiny flies that had invaded our room overnight and remained thereafter. But nonetheless, we really enjoyed our stay and felt it was great value.

Evening meals worth eating.

Used the Boatside for a couple of evening meals whilst staying at local bed and breakfast accommodation. First impressions were good - large car park, outside drinking and kids play area. Food available in the bar or restaurant. Interesting menu with a mix of local food like Northumberland sausage, popular burgers of fish and chips, extending to West Indies and Vietnamese dishes. Well stocked bar - attentive staff. Well cooked food with massive portions - so large that the wife had to request half portions. No negative points.

Hoping to get dog friendly award

This was on our list of places to visit whilst on our holiday and as we were in the next village along although it was a drive we were not disappointed. The place looked great from the outside covered in fantastic hanging baskets and troughs filled with lovely bright colours. Nice beer garden even though it is set right on the bend of a main road. They have accommodation at the back which looked nice and clean. the pub itself is divided into a restaurant and a bar area. The bar area has split seating with a small area containing 5 tables and chairs all set up for eating at as well as the tables in front of the bar The bar area is dog friendly and they are hoping to win the award for the most dog friendliest pub in the area, although they need to offer doggy biscuits like most other places do. The staff are very friendly and nothing is too much trouble for them. Ate here twice and had no complaints about the food as it was lovely, had the pie of the day which was beef and guiness and was enormous. Filled with beef that melted in your mouth and a thick rich gravy. My husband had northumberland sausage and mash and we shared vegetables. On our second visit I had Beef Burger and chips and coleslaw and my husband had mince and dumplings. they have a better menu than the red lion and they have a great specials board. If you are sitting outside as well they also provide blankets if it becomes a little chilly. Would definately return.

Sunday lunch

So me and my partner had booked and come to the boat side inn... when we first walked in the waitress looked at us but still proceeded to talk and laugh on for a further 5 minutes... she finally seated us at our table and asked us what we would like to drink. They came and took our food order from us which was fine and not long after our food came out... but we still hadn’t had our drinks so I asked and I was informed they forgot to do them.. when he had made them he put them on the side and asked his work colleague to bring them over 3 time and no one did so I went and got them myself and had to ask for sauces... the Sunday lunch wasn’t the best I’ve ever had at the boat side inn... the Yorkshire’s weren’t edible they were extremely burnt.... we got one bit of beef... 2 under cooked roast potatoes and that’s just some of it! Dessert was good and some staff were friendly! But working in this industry I don’t understand why all your staff sat down for their breaks together and in front of all the customers?

Overnight stay to meet family

YorkshireDoubleD, Selby
We stayed in the Boatside for one night and had a meal on the restaurant so we could meet family and catch up. We were travelling with our dog so chose a dog friendly room. The room was bright and clean with lots of nice touches such as toiletries, tea, coffee and biscuits. Free WiFi really helped. It was very quiet - there is a railway line behind the hotel but we only heard one train and that was early evening. It was also really handy to be able to park our car right outside the room. As we had our dog with us we had to eat in the bar - dogs not allowed in the restaurant. The staff were really friendly and helpful. Food was very nice and reasonably priced with a decent wine menu. Breakfast was very good - not just the usual cheap bacon and sausage. All in all a really good stay. Handy for Hexham and lovely and quiet. Will definitely be back.
