A Victorian country hall in extensive grounds overlooking the North Tyne river and Dunterley Fell. Award-winning restaurant with Les Routier Gold Plate and AA rosette. Real ale, log fires and candlelit dinners. A warm, friendly atmosphere. Although undoubtedly Northumbria's premier sporting hotel with its sought after salmon beats, cricket and football field and indoor swimming pool it is also the nearest hotel to Kielder Water, is opposite Bellingham's renowned golf course and handy for walking on Hadrian's wall, the Pennine Way and Kielder Forest! But, still well over half of the hotel's guests are tourists out to enjoy the peace and tranquillity of Northumberland's National Park and sample the hotels widely respected food and hospitality.

Weekend visit

pauline w, Newcastle upon tyne
Booked for a Friday, Saturday night break. First impressions the place appears a bit run down. Was greeted at reception and shown to our room. We were in a superior room which was large with a super king size bed. Large bathroom with 2 windows and curtains and blinds. No shortage of very hot water. Very comfortable bed and 2 radiators which we needed as it was freezing. We ate dinner in the restaurant on the first night. Both had salmon fishcake for starters with a sauce, next course lamb rumb with potatoe cakes and vegetables, unfortunately this came on a bed of unappetising lentils and gravy. My husband went in the pool and sauna which was freezing, it was put on at 1pm the next day ready for his swim at 3pm. It was warmer but nowhere near the temperature needed for a sauna. Our second night we ate in the bar and enjoyed our meals with a lovey fire to stand around. Breakfast on both mornings were excellent. Would go back again as the friendly staff make up for the lack of luxury.

Home from home

Clair R,
From the time you walk into the Riverdale till the time you leave your made to feel like part of the fixtures and fittings nothing is a bother for the staff and the food is to die for.all home made and fresh.we will definately be back.

A beautiful room, let down by the 1990s restaurant

w let me start by saying, having a restaurant that doesn't serve chips in baskets and puddings on slates is, to me, not a bad thing at all.  I just couldn't put my finger on it here.  The menu was small - and somewhat odd. There was one page of food and 4 or 5 of wines.  All to be served in the standard 1990s wine glasses.  I watched a couple have a sample out of a straight sided tumbler!?  Very very odd to have such a list with non of the bang.  I did opt for the oddest dish of butternut squash rissoto with goats cheese and pesto.  My hunger took over - the dish was awful.  A round of goats cheese plonked on the top, with rind still on (?)  I don't eat fish, game or offal- which took away every single dish on the menu.  I had dessert of sticky toffee which was nice, but small - and served in a cereal bowl with sloppy aerosol cream.  I ordered coffee too, with home made fudge  (no, came with a plastic wrapped biscuit) and the coffee was so so strong even my Italian friends would leave it.  All whilst sat in absoutle silence.  So, so off-putting.  The 2 other couples had to whisper every word they said.  Rather glad I was sat here on my own.  It does help you hear every ping of the microwave through. The bedroom has recently been refurbished to a high standard - however cleaning practices have already started to slide in a new room. The staff are very pleasant and keen to grin through.

A great stay

We stayed here with our son in a self catering apartment Milburn suite. Lovely accommodation. My son loved the huge open field, play area and pool. We loved the food, customer service and views from the hotel. We'll definitely be back.

Warm friendly, old world charm, hotel

We stayed on a freezing weekend at the Riverdale. First impression as you walked into reception, warm and very cosy. The room were large, clean, and had great views, spotless linen and towels, The staff were very efficient, friendly, and polite nothing was a trouble to them The food was the best, all freshly cooked, good choice of local game and plenty choices. We didn't realise it was a music weekend of jazz, but this was an added bonus, fabulous music and entertainment all weekend, we had restful days and great evenings. I highly recommend this hotel.
