Super relaxing, lovely country house hotel

Merops, London, United Kingdom
We spent five nights here with our two dogs and absolutely loved it. There are lots of positives - spacious rooms, really good dinners, very friendly and welcoming staff, truly dog friendly, well maintained grounds and a decent spa. Set in the heart of the countryside, within easy access of the A1 and Alnwick and only a few minutes' drive to a stunning beach at Low Newton - perfect for early morning dog walks - this is a classic English country house hotel. The decor won't be to everyone's taste, but who comes to a country house hotel for the decor? The highlights for us were the staff - so, so welcoming - and dinners. Talking of which, the day before our third dinner, we were asked what we would like to eat - "ask for anything you would like", they said. So we did - a dozen oysters, then dressed crab, whelks and prawns, turbot and something with ginger and rhubarb for pudding. None of these are ingredients we had seen on the menu. What did we get the following evening? Only all of the above, brilliantly presented, tasting fantastic and all at a reasonable price. We remain so very impressed by this. So why not four stars? Well, service can be haphazard - most of the staff don't seem to have been trained, so there are niggles, both in the restaurant and at the bar, where the staff don't know how to mix even simple drinks (this extended not only to basic cocktails but when someone at a neighbouring table ordered Pimms, that is literally what they got - about a triple helping of neat Pimms with no lemonade or other mixer...). Glasses are frequently dirty - lipstick marks on the rims etc. When we asked, on more than one occasion, for glasses to be replaced with clean ones, the dirty ones were breezily explained away by the fact that the dishwasher doesn't always clean them properly. That's not really good enough, Doxford! We noticed that the few staff who are truly competent work very hard covering for everybody else. That ought to be addressed, or the hotel will risk losing their star employees. The other niggle is the wifi - it did not work at all in our room in the 5 days we were there, despite there being a router/hub in our room and the hotel resetting it at least once. It was haphazard to say the least - intermittent and unreliable - in the rest of the hotel. These niggles ultimately did not detract from our stay. We would absolutely return here with the dogs and hope to see many of the very welcoming and friendly staff faces when we do. Let's hope the hotel hangs onto its head chef too!

Great location to explore the area

Good size and comfortable rooms, well kept pool and sauna and grounds, very nice dinner with helpful, prompt and unobtrusive service. The perfect base to explore the area and a lovely restful ambience in the house and grounds. I also noted that there was good access if bringing elderly relatives and dogs were welcomed, there is the proper space and facilities for them, As a regular business traveller over 30 years I have become insenstive to their differences, but this was worth the money even when it is your own !

Birthday night away

Alice R,
Couldn't fault our night away, we stayed in the couch house and the room was perfect. They had even written a little Birthday message for my partner in chocolate which was a nice touch. The food was delicious all made better by the service. We also enjoyed some amazing treatments and found the whole experience very relaxing. We will definitely be back.

An excellent hotel in a great setting

A lovely Georgian building that has managed to insert modern facilities without compromising the classic architecture. The food was excellent and the staff friendly and helpful. Well placed to enjoy all the attractions of the Northumberland coast and the county's heritage.

Doll Up at Doxford Hall

A_Allen_13, Bloomington, Indiana
I booked this hotel as a little treat for me and my partner. During our two weeks in the UK, we are doing a fair amount of outdoor activities so I wanted a little spa time too. After checking-in and putting our things down in our room, we wandered down to the pool and jacuzzi area. The pool area is tucked away and wasn't the easiest for us to find but it was clean and the water was warm. After showering and putting on fresh clothes, my partner and I decided to try the vegan burger at the hotel. We arrived at the hotel restaurant and were told that we could not eat there without nicer clothes. As I mentioned before, we are mostly here for hiking and outdoor activities; I honestly did not have clothes that the restaurant thought would be acceptable with me. Later I discovered that the vegan burger is offered in the lounge anyway, not the restaurant, but by then the lounge had stopped offering food. Ultimately, my partner and I did not eat dinner on the night we stayed at Doxford Hall Hotel. It made for quite a hangry stay. Also, the internet was garbage. Don't forget your Sunday best if you stay here.
