Overview

Set west of Newcastle in 1000 stunning acres of Northumberland forest and moorland is Slaley Hall. The hotel owes its existence to Charles Samuel Hunting, who first purchased the estate in the late 1800's. Today it remains a symbol of Edwardian elegance and a grand retreat from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.

Guests have a choice of 141 individually designed rooms, including suites in the Old or New Hall with spa baths, separate lounges and bedrooms, and a pick of different eating venues - Hadrian's Brasserie, The Claret Jug and a range of private dining rooms.

Slaley Hall is the only hotel in Northumbria to have two championship golf courses. Both courses are 72 par, and cater for anything from local community and corporate events through to major national and international tournaments, at the same time maintaining the standards of service and course access demanded by regular club members.

Slaley Hall has hosted the England football team - who took advantage of the hotel's football pitch during their stay.

As an alternative to golf, guests can relax by taking a swim in the leisure club's 20m pool, enjoying a treatment in the health and beauty spa or sampling the estate's numerous outdoor activities. These include clay pigeon shooting, archery, quad biking, mountain biking and off road driving. There are also options of short or long walks around the hotel's extensive gardens, which enable guests to enjoy the Northumberland scenery, as well as the estate's Japanese garden's and resident red squirrels.

'What a shame'

DaveyJulie2009, Newcastle upon Tyne, United Kingdom
Just returned from a 2 nights stay, we had the pleasure of getting married at Slaley Hall 10yrs ago when it was a DeVere hotel. We regularly visit the hotel as it holds special memories. This time we have decided not to return, the hotel is in desperate need of a lick of paint! The grounds are stunning and some rooms are lovely. However it's starting to look dated and not the 4* it deserves. The food was very disappointing, couldn't even get a panini right! When we complained I was given another one which was equally as bad and then charged for it. The personnel touches that Slaley Hall once offered have gone and it is very much a business now. We asked for late check out and in the past you could have complimentary late check out until 12, however this has changed and it's an additional £10 for every hour post 11am check out, again another nice touch removed. Q hotels seem intent on running Slaley Hall into the ground and this is very much a shame, we will always have fond memories but will not be returning.

Spa break

debbieingledew, Maidenhead, United Kingdom
I do like spas and have been to many. Slayley hall spa is average and could be so much better. We visited over night as my friend wanted to celebrate her retirement so stay included spa access, treatment, dinner and breakfast....so value was good. Where it was disappointing was spa experience. Massage treatment was ok if felt rushed near the end...pool area needs total refurbishment as not enough seating...quite chilly...open to family and children who are hotel guests...I really don’t want to share spa time with them when we had come to relax. Hotel room was comfortable and lovely bed...staff were friendly and attentive....so love hotel but not not spa and indoor leisure facilities. Please upgrade and decide if you really do want to offer a proper and luxurious spa experience I might come back but not until then .........so it is Seaham hall that I will be going to instead whilst you decide!

Lovely afternoon tea excellent service

Thompas155, Newcastle upon Tyne, United Kingdom
We were invited for afternoon tea to compensate for a bad experience we had last time could not have been more different. The service we received was fantastic. The choices for the afternoon tea fabulous. You now have a choice of birdcage which is traditional sweet afternoon tea or the bookcase which is more savoury selections. The presentation was amazing with the bookcase being presented on a wooden shelving unit and the birdcage on a 3 tier cake stand with half a cage surround. Nothing was too much trouble we had several dietary requirements which were dealt with perfectly. Definately recommend

Weekend-Fathers Day treat

Nicbod78,
We spent the afternoon at the pool after having a drink in the bar enjoying watching our two boys (10yrs and 7yrs) making mocktails with the lovely barman (didn’t catch his name!) We had dinner in the restaurant with Adam as our waiter, he was attentive, polite and really looked after us. He is a credit to Slaley Hall. Thank you for a lovely evening.

Another fantastic visit to Slaley Hall

Julie M, Knaresborough, United Kingdom
A 2 night birthday treat last weekend and as before, the whole experience was fantastic. We had a beautiful suite (101) which was perfect for us as my 12 year old son had his own bedroom & bathroom. We had a beautiful meal in Hadrian's Brasserie and was fortunate enough to have Cristian look after us again - he is so attentive and welcoming - a real credit to Slaley. Afternoon Tea in Dukes was fantastic - I can highly recommend the Bookcase if you have a savoury tooth (although there are still plenty of sweet treats on it!). We visited the 19th hole bar a number of times during our stay and Will & Ryan once again, allowed my son to make his own Mocktail. The pool area is really pleasant to sit round - although we went swimming early evening - around 6pm once it had quietened down and I was looking forward to relaxing with a glass of prosecco whilst the boys had a swim but the juice bar had closed so that was a bit disappointing. The team at Slaley are great, everyone is very pleasant & helpful. Can't wait to return again.
