Set west of Newcastle in 1000 stunning acres of Northumberland forest and moorland is Slaley Hall. The hotel owes its existence to Charles Samuel Hunting, who first purchased the estate in the late 1800's. Today it remains a symbol of Edwardian elegance and a grand retreat from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.

Guests have a choice of 141 individually designed rooms, including suites in the Old or New Hall with spa baths, separate lounges and bedrooms, and a pick of different eating venues - Hadrian's Brasserie, The Claret Jug and a range of private dining rooms.

Slaley Hall is the only hotel in Northumbria to have two championship golf courses. Both courses are 72 par, and cater for anything from local community and corporate events through to major national and international tournaments, at the same time maintaining the standards of service and course access demanded by regular club members.

Slaley Hall has hosted the England football team - who took advantage of the hotel's football pitch during their stay.

As an alternative to golf, guests can relax by taking a swim in the leisure club's 20m pool, enjoying a treatment in the health and beauty spa or sampling the estate's numerous outdoor activities. These include clay pigeon shooting, archery, quad biking, mountain biking and off road driving. There are also options of short or long walks around the hotel's extensive gardens, which enable guests to enjoy the Northumberland scenery, as well as the estate's Japanese garden's and resident red squirrels.

Great Golf

Simione12, Newcastle upon Tyne, United Kingdom
I have been golfin with a few friends for some time now and and about a week ago I was here to golf on the hunting course. It is a really wel kept course and I would recommend it to any of my friends. After a good day we went to have a drink in the sports bar where the atmosphere is really relaxed. We were served by a new waiter called Thomas who really made us feel at home. We went back at the end of the evening and we all agreed that it is one of our favourite places. We will certainly come back here. Thank you for the lovely time.

Spa day, poor food

Sarah W,
This is the 3rd time I have been to Slaley Hall for a Spa Day. Beautiful location, facilities here are very good. Went to the Gym, a good selection of equipment for what I wanted... however it is extremely hot in there even with the 2 windows open. I had 2 spa treatments, an Express facial and a neck back and shoulder massage which was brilliant. I asked for a deep massage, and that's exactly what I got, the knots in my back dissolved away. Now for the light lunch, WHY OH WHY has this been changed, we were told you could help yourself to soup and salad and puddings. Soup urn was empty but we just managed to get 2 bowls from it, salad this time was also very poor. You had to order your main course, think there was 2 vegetarian options, chicken salad and swedish meatballs which I picked. I'm not joking when I say there was 5 very small meatballs which came with a handful of chopped beetroot and apple. Must say the meatballs were very tasty, but just not enough when you have been there all day. The pudding although nice , by 2 o'clock they had ran out of some puddings with an hour of dinner service still left. This has put me off returning here, from my 1st visit the food was plentiful to the 2nd time medioka to this 3rd time really not good. I'm not a one to give a bad review but I was dissapointed you can tell when companies are cutting costs and corners. I was so looking forward to a nice meal. But like I say massages and treatments were 1st class.

Great golf and excellent supper.

I booked a night away for my husbands birthday with two rounds of golf included and our friends did the same. Our husbands really enjoyed the golf especially on the Hunting Course. It was more difficult but they said it was beautiful. After the boys first round we met in the Claret Jug for a drink. It was nice sitting in the sunshine watching the golfers go by. They also did a really good bacon and egg bap. That evening we had a delicious meal in Hadrian's. Our service from our waitress Jennifer was also first class. Overall a really enjoyable night away!

Terribly overpriced for a tired hotel with average food and service

We stayed overnight, ate and used the spa. Check in was good. Room was ok, but at £180 a night could have been much better. No decent coffee, bathroom same standard as premier inn. The spa was packed! The changing rooms awful, no lockers worked and spa staff unwelcoming. The spa was not clean as it could be, the sauna gave me a splinter and I would not return. The service in the restaurant was terrible. Food was average and meal came to nearly £100. Starters and mains rushed out, then we waited for ages for our plates to be taken away after main meal. We did not get asked if we needed any more drinks. I had to get up and ask myself! The over all experience was not worth the hefty price on check out. I don’t mind paying if it’s good. Don’t come here for a nice night away in a hotel... you will certainly not be impressed.

We stayed here as part of a two night package, Check in was slick, shown to our room which looked a little tired, handle off the set of draws, and on the cupboard which housed the safe. The spa was relaxing. The food in the brassierie was excellent I had the prawns and crayfish followed by the belly pork and my husband choose the ox cheek. Only negative was that the room was rather noisy and rowdy. lots of foreign staff whose english was not that good , so service could have been better.
