Overview

Karl and Cindy Wait took over the Wooler Youth Hostel and Shepherds’Huts from March 2018. They have two Daughters, Evie (21 year old) and Daisy (12 Years Old).

They are a local family who firmly believe that Wooler and the wider area of Northumberland have lots to offer.

Wooler Hostel and Shepherd's Huts offer a traditional 3* Youth Hostelling experience with a truly northern welcome; providing good value, low cost, spacious accommodation suitable for single travellers, families, large groups- including schools, universities, and sporting clubs- looking to stay in North Northumberland. Guests can enjoy a stay in one of the newly refurbished en-suite bedrooms in the hostel or in one of the traditional and distinctive Shepherd's Huts- which capture the true spirit of the Northumbrian countryside. A former Land Army Girls' hostel, the building is accessible throughout for all ages and abilities and located in extensive well maintained grounds rich in wildlife.

In an enviable rural location on the edge of Northumberland National Park with panoramic views across Glendale, Wooler Hostel is one of the area's most understated places to stay with access to the hills and countryside of North Northumberland and the National Park on your doorstep. In 2013 The Park was awarded 'Dark Sky Status' and visitors to Wooler during the winter months are rewarded generously with some of the deepest darkest skies.

Come and marvel at the historical, geological and natural environment of The Cheviot Hills and Glendale while out walking or cycling, before returning to the hostel to recall your adventure and around the wood burning stove, safe in the knowledge your equipment will be drying out ready for the next days adventure. Choose from self-catering, or for those guests who wish, we offer delicious home-cooked hearty meals at reasonable prices.

Guests can access countless short walks in the local area, and longer walks into the Cheviot Hills. Cyclists have access to limitless terrain, from Wooler - the home of the Wooler Cycle Hub- with 7 routes radiating from the centre of Glendale. And for the serious cyclists, there is the Wooler Wheel sportive to tackle.
Whether you're a lone path trekker, long distance cyclist, family fun forager, or a group out for a gathering – for a day, short break, or longer- Wooler Hostel will help you recharge – just as it looked after the girls in the War!

Karl is a qualified Mountain Guide who can give you lot’s of advice on local walks, and regularly organises guided walks in the Cheviot Hills.

Close to town and very homely

EveLancashire, Barnoldswick, United Kingdom
We stayed 3 nights in a private en suite room at this family run hostel. While the room itself wasn’t big enough to swing a cat it was adequate for somewhere to sleep and shower and the wet room was adequate. It was very quiet at night. There’s a lot of history here as the land girls used to stay here during the war. Each room is named after one of them and has a plaque in the room detailing their story. The common room has been decorated in keeping with the heritage of the building with some war memorabilia dotted about. There’s some canteen style tables and also comfy sofas around a cosy electric wood burner. The self catering kitchen is a good size and well equipped with everything you need. Although you can’t book breakfast online via the YHA website you can book it on arrival. £7pp for a full English served at 8am. We didn’t bother with this and walked 5 minutes down the hill to the co op for supplies instead. There was plenty of parking on site during our stay. Free WiFi with a good signal.

Annual Easter Family Holiday

shelleyashton266, Manchester, United Kingdom
What an absolutely lovely establishment. We booked 3 nights in Wooler YHA. First trip to Northumberland, so happy with our choice of accommodation. Lovely welcome, fantastic common room, kitchen so equipped for everything. Beautiful free range eggs to buy at a steal 50p for 2 which were delicious, we were lucky to share our time with other friendly guests. The family running the YHA couldn't be more hospitable . Excellent powerful shower - the one to the right before u go into the ladies is the best. Room was tad small for family of 4 staying 3 nights with not really anywhere to put belongings in the bedroom apart from like a bonfire in centre of room but not the end of the world. Only request would be to put individual wall lamps for each bunk so main light can go out and if u wish to read u can. Highly recommend. The town has co-op, pubs in spitting distance, would stay again without a shadow of a doubt. Thank u for a wonderful time xxx

One of the best hostels I have stayed in

_alison_barclay01, Edinburgh, United Kingdom
This building is spacious, comfortable, warm and in a good location. We had a twin en-suite. Very small rooms. The kitchen is big. The drying room excellent. The lounge is big and is a great place to chat to other travellers. Friendly welcome. Good value.

Quite A Traditional Youth Hostel

Steve_an_Jean, Oakham, United Kingdom
Reminds me of my youth (long ago!) when I regularly stayed at youth hostels. Since then many have become rather 'gentrified' but at Wooler you can find good traditional standards and it is much the better for it. A big communal sitting area for a chinwag with other guests, a big kitchen and a wet area for toilets and showers. I stayed in a two bunk room and the toilets were just a little way down the corridor. The place was clean and pretty well maintained. I had breakfast provided which was of good quality but this cost a little extra (£5 or 10 I think) and had to be ordered in advance. The building itself looked utilitarian (a bit like an old barracks) and was on the outskirts of town. The town was only a 100yds away though and had an ATM, a few pubs, a cafe and at least one restaurant.
