Overview

Karl and Cindy Wait took over the Wooler Youth Hostel and Shepherds’Huts from March 2018. They have two Daughters, Evie (21 year old) and Daisy (12 Years Old).

They are a local family who firmly believe that Wooler and the wider area of Northumberland have lots to offer.

Wooler Hostel and Shepherd's Huts offer a traditional 3* Youth Hostelling experience with a truly northern welcome; providing good value, low cost, spacious accommodation suitable for single travellers, families, large groups- including schools, universities, and sporting clubs- looking to stay in North Northumberland. Guests can enjoy a stay in one of the newly refurbished en-suite bedrooms in the hostel or in one of the traditional and distinctive Shepherd's Huts- which capture the true spirit of the Northumbrian countryside. A former Land Army Girls' hostel, the building is accessible throughout for all ages and abilities and located in extensive well maintained grounds rich in wildlife.

In an enviable rural location on the edge of Northumberland National Park with panoramic views across Glendale, Wooler Hostel is one of the area's most understated places to stay with access to the hills and countryside of North Northumberland and the National Park on your doorstep. In 2013 The Park was awarded 'Dark Sky Status' and visitors to Wooler during the winter months are rewarded generously with some of the deepest darkest skies.

Come and marvel at the historical, geological and natural environment of The Cheviot Hills and Glendale while out walking or cycling, before returning to the hostel to recall your adventure and around the wood burning stove, safe in the knowledge your equipment will be drying out ready for the next days adventure. Choose from self-catering, or for those guests who wish, we offer delicious home-cooked hearty meals at reasonable prices.

Guests can access countless short walks in the local area, and longer walks into the Cheviot Hills. Cyclists have access to limitless terrain, from Wooler - the home of the Wooler Cycle Hub- with 7 routes radiating from the centre of Glendale. And for the serious cyclists, there is the Wooler Wheel sportive to tackle.
Whether you're a lone path trekker, long distance cyclist, family fun forager, or a group out for a gathering – for a day, short break, or longer- Wooler Hostel will help you recharge – just as it looked after the girls in the War!

Karl is a qualified Mountain Guide who can give you lot’s of advice on local walks, and regularly organises guided walks in the Cheviot Hills.

helpul and efficient

marjorie d, Corby, United Kingdom
Had a great time in shepherds hut in July. Peaceful even in school holidays and family run whose local knowledge proved very useful when I stupidly fouind myself and partner without a booking on a Saturday night. All was sorted after many phonecalls on our behalf and we were both very gratefull.

Trad youth hostel

hemingwayaway, england
Stayed in a 4bed dorm that was clean, as was the kitchen, but not the toilets which held plenty of longstanding cobwebs. Nice big communal lounge. Secure bike storage. Garden. Plenty of loan books (no TV). Odd shower didn't work. Plenty of places to eat in Wooler and a great coop open 0700-2300 every day-all a 5minute walk. It's on The Penine Cycle and offers cheap as chips accommodation.

Very good hostel and a great alternative to more expensive hotels

Djh2711, Dundee, United Kingdom
Situated just above the lovely old town of wooler on the edge of wonderful walking and cycling country. The hostel is actually on route 68 going through the national park. I was cycling alone and there is good space for cycles to be stored. I had a pleasant welcome and the two staff I met were friendly and very helpful with directions, recommendations for local food, things to do,etc. I had a single room that had 4 beds plus my own toilet and shower. Excellent. All for £42 for the night. I hired a towel for £2 and the full breakfast was £6.50. This was cooked very well. There were other choices and of course one can just cook your own. For dinner I ate in the Black Bull in the village, which was ok. If I went again I would recommend the Italian restaurant Milan behind the Black Bull. Nicer ambience and better food. If you are cycling or walking do take food and drink with you as opportunities to purchase on the hills are limited. There is a large lounge, dining area available to guests as well as outside areas to relax. The hostel was quiet and there was decent quick WiFi. I would definitely use this hostel again.

Warmest of welcomes

Alice P, Yorkshire, UK
Lovely to stay in a YHA that hasn't had all the character and stuffing knocked out of it. Unlike others that have have had the corporate YHA design gurus at work, this is a proper hostel and with it proper, welcoming staff and a lovely atmosphere. It has all the usual facilities you'd expect; maybe a bedside light would have been nice but that's the only negative comment I could make. Everything is rather spotlessly clean. Maybe because it doesn't attract the bigger walking groups of the Lakes and Dales, all fellow guests are friendly and engaging. Great outdoor space, including the inner courtyard and garden area. Dogs welcome as well – which was lovely to see. A hostel with its own character – and an excellent character at that.

Great Old-style Hostel

PaulGraham99, London, United Kingdom
I like this hostel. The rooms are a bit small but all I did was sleep there so not a problem. Everything else is fine. You can take meals or cook your own in the self-catering kitchen. Plenty of comfy chairs around and an easygoing environment to chat to other travellers. The decor is somewhat dated (indeed the building has an interesting history) but things work - decent showers, instant hot water, well equipped kitchen etc, I was hiking in the area and it was most helpful to talk to Karl the warden. I think he has a mountain qualification but in any event he clearly knew the local area and was able to confirm the existence of a path where none was shown on my map. He was also able to advise how boggy it was on my intended route up Hedgehope Hill, having been up it himself the previous day! No 'airs and graces' - just good value for money.
