Overview

Karl and Cindy Wait took over the Wooler Youth Hostel and Shepherds’Huts from March 2018. They have two Daughters, Evie (21 year old) and Daisy (12 Years Old).

They are a local family who firmly believe that Wooler and the wider area of Northumberland have lots to offer.

Wooler Hostel and Shepherd's Huts offer a traditional 3* Youth Hostelling experience with a truly northern welcome; providing good value, low cost, spacious accommodation suitable for single travellers, families, large groups- including schools, universities, and sporting clubs- looking to stay in North Northumberland. Guests can enjoy a stay in one of the newly refurbished en-suite bedrooms in the hostel or in one of the traditional and distinctive Shepherd's Huts- which capture the true spirit of the Northumbrian countryside. A former Land Army Girls' hostel, the building is accessible throughout for all ages and abilities and located in extensive well maintained grounds rich in wildlife.

In an enviable rural location on the edge of Northumberland National Park with panoramic views across Glendale, Wooler Hostel is one of the area's most understated places to stay with access to the hills and countryside of North Northumberland and the National Park on your doorstep. In 2013 The Park was awarded 'Dark Sky Status' and visitors to Wooler during the winter months are rewarded generously with some of the deepest darkest skies.

Come and marvel at the historical, geological and natural environment of The Cheviot Hills and Glendale while out walking or cycling, before returning to the hostel to recall your adventure and around the wood burning stove, safe in the knowledge your equipment will be drying out ready for the next days adventure. Choose from self-catering, or for those guests who wish, we offer delicious home-cooked hearty meals at reasonable prices.

Guests can access countless short walks in the local area, and longer walks into the Cheviot Hills. Cyclists have access to limitless terrain, from Wooler - the home of the Wooler Cycle Hub- with 7 routes radiating from the centre of Glendale. And for the serious cyclists, there is the Wooler Wheel sportive to tackle.
Whether you're a lone path trekker, long distance cyclist, family fun forager, or a group out for a gathering – for a day, short break, or longer- Wooler Hostel will help you recharge – just as it looked after the girls in the War!

Karl is a qualified Mountain Guide who can give you lot’s of advice on local walks, and regularly organises guided walks in the Cheviot Hills.

Lovely stay in Shepherds Hut, alas too short!!

carolinecrawfordcasc, Glasgow, United Kingdom
The Youth Hostel was clean and when we arrived slightly later than check-in we were happily accomodated. Shepherds Huts were clean and had plug points, heaters mirror and fold down table and chairs, very comfortable. Bed linen was clean and fresh like it was brand new. There are nearby toilets and the showers were clean and hot in the morning. Had to leave early than expected to go diving and the couple who ran the Youth Hostel were amazingly accomodating and got up early enough to make us tea and toast before we left, which was fantastic. All in all a lovely stay and if I'm in the area again, I would be happy to stay there.

Brilliant place for a get together

320sherin, Edinburgh, United Kingdom
We stumbled upon this hostel when our regular yearly get together hostel couldn't take us and what a find! Cindy and her family couldn't be more accommodating and we had the best time - so much so that there was serious chat about making this our new yearly destination. There were about 14 familes of varying ages total and we managed to spread ourselves across the 8 bed, the 6 bed and a bunch of 4 bed and 2 bed rooms - some ensuite, some not but a big bathroom just a few steps away. All rooms have bunkbeds apart from one of the Shepherd huts which has a double bed with a single bunk on top. There were also 3 Shepherd Huts which were so cute with heating and electricity. We self catered and the kitchen was fab - big enough to cook 3 meals a day for 50ish people and 3 sinks to wash up in. There was enough seating for every one and along with the big communal room, there was a little seating area at the back that some of the bigger kids hung out in with a sofa and chairs. The outdoor space is great - a cute courtyard and a big open space outside the hostel with picnic tables - some of us didn't leave all day as the weather was too nice and the kids were having a ball. Others ventured off to the park where they discovered a retro milkshake bar. The hostel was nice and clean - new bedding on the beds too which was nice and free wifi. The hostel has a few chickens and ducks which roam freely and are really friendly - they even started laying their first eggs the day we arrived. The kids loved them - one little warning - they start cockadoodling at 6.30am but we all agreed it was the sound of the country and better than traffic noises. They didn't do it for very long and we all just fell back asleep - and some of us weren't woken up at all. Great weekend - and the perfect place for a stress free, laid back get together weekend.

Very welcoming

joan s, Baildon, United Kingdom
We stayed in this Youth Hostel recently when walking the St Cuthbert's Way. The warden was very kind when we arrived, wet through after walking from Kirk Yeltholm in the pouring rain, he immediately offered us a cuppa and switched on the drying room. The room was clean, if a little snug! Breakfast was very basic and to be honest a little disappointing;an over cooked piece of bacon between two slices of bread. The hostel however were very kind to return a pair of trousers that one of our group managed to lose when we were there! I would recommend this hostel especially if they improve the breakfast.

Lovely hostel

Peter C, Leeds
Came here as part of our week away in Northumberland. Whilst it took us a while to get used to the place, it is a really nice hostel! All the board games, books etc. are there as expected, the rooms were cosy but comfortable and all the facilities we needed were there. There was lots of information about the history of the site as well which was very interesting. I do have to point out that they don't do evening meals (or at least there was no sign of them when we went) and breakfast is only cereal and a bacon sandwich, although there are plenty of nice cafés in the village that do breakfast for a reasonable price. Would definitely come here again if spending any time in the area.

Used the hostel as our valley base for a Duke of Edinburgh Expedtion in what can only be described as very challenging conditions - Great location and friendly staff. Definetly use it again. All the best to Cindy and Karl who now run the hostel.
