Overview

Set high on a dramatic escarpment on Hadrian's Wall World Heritage Site, Housesteads Roman Fort takes you back to the Roman Empire.

Wander the barrack blocks and the hospital. Peer into the oldest toilets you're ever likely to see, and admire the stunning panoramic views from this ancient fortress.

English Heritage's interactive museum showcases objects once belonging to Roman soldiers, and the mini-cinema will take you on a journey through time.

Pack a picnic and enjoy a Roman adventure overlooking panoramic vistas.

Note: The Fort is owned by National Trust but managed by English Heritage. The car park is owned by Northumberland National Park and parking charges apply.

Very interesting

Well developed historical site with helpful staff and good information displays. Useful film to set the scene and context. The walk from visitor centre to the site is quite steep and could be difficult for someone with disabilities.

Go to Vindolanda instead!

We were walking the Hadrians Wall path, which kind of led us into Housesteads. We were hoping to refill our water bottles here, but the staff were unable to do this - I guess there's no mains water feed. We did mange a couple of teas from the vending machine though. There isn't any real infrastructure up here so I would advise anyone to go to Vindolanda instead. At least we didn't have to pay the car parking charges!

Very good preservation of a sloping site

A rare chance to see a Roman fort site on a hill top. Pleasantly renovated with protected walkways and easy to understand explanations. And then we have the famous latrine! The adjoining museum is very small but informative. The food/drink section is welcome but very under exploited. A portaloo ditto. This has to be a site that could accommodate a larger facility.

We live 3 miles from the wall , and it’s fantastic , but can I point out that as pensioners that only want to walk our dog and view the attractions it is too much money .we have been to The museums etc many times but I would like to say , can pensioners and locals who live in Haltwhistle have a free pass .we would support the cafe’s etc .

Good walking and fantastic scenery

Wonderful - so much history, good walking and fantastic scenery. You can walk along the wall for about one hundred yards without damaging it. This is a really good walking area. We loved it!
