Overview

Visitors to Corbridge Roman Town can walk along the main street of this Roman garrison town, flanked by the remains of granaries, a fountain house, markets, workshops and temples.

Astride the intersection of Roman Dere Street and Stanegate, Corbridge was initially the site of a series of important forts. But after Hadrian's Wall was fully commissioned it developed into a prosperous town, a tempting leave-centre for off-duty Wall garrisons.

Today, you can still walk through the town's streets and experience a time-capsule of Roman life. You can also discover Roman armour and trinkets uncovered with the Corbridge Hoard at the museum. The Hoard was one of the most significant finds in Roman history, providing us with a fascinating insight into the life of a soldier on the Wall. The museum is also home to the Corbridge Collection, the largest of the Hadrian's Walls collections.

Roman Ruins

OCCaliTrip, Placentia, California
We were excited to tour our first Roman ruins in the Hadrian's Wall area. There is something fascinating imagining how ancient Romans lived while touring the remains of their town. The museum was very interesting.

One of our favourite villages to go with the dogs. Full of great pubs and coffee shops, most of which are dog friendly. There is a great eclectic shop called RE behind the shell garage.. Really worth a visit.

Very pretty and unusual shops

EKFleet, Fleet, United Kingdom
Pretty place to stop and browse for unusual gifts or household items. Some expensive clothes shops, public toilets and tea shops. This is a Roman town and I think there may be a museum, but we didn’t investigate.

absorbing

These are really good ruins in a good state of preservation. Things here you wont see anywhere else. There are still 10 acres underground just waiting for funding to unearth them.

Lovely town with good walking

ELIZABETH B, Newcastle, United Kingdom
Corbridge is a very pretty town with lovely shops and good restaurants. We visited the many varied shops and enjoyed a lovely walk by the river with our dogs. We will be returning for the Christmas Shopping Evening in December, late night shopping and street food.
