William Martin Tour – denier of science and an eccentric for our time

Overview

Overview

A free illustrated talk on the life and work of William Martin. Booking is required. Join David Kidd as he gives a free Heritage Open Day talk at Hexham Old Gaol 21st September at 1pm. William (1772-1851) was a rope-maker, inventor, natural scientist and poet, born near Haltwhistle in Northumberland and is one of the county’s most eccentric characters.

Described as ‘perfectly cracked, but harmless’, William was violently opposed to the mechanistic, experimental philosophy of Sir Isaac Newton. He was also infatuated with the idea of ‘perpetual motion’ and the non-existence of gravity.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, his experiments and inventions met with varying degrees of success! The talk will be given by David Kidd and is FREE, but booking is required. Please email or phone us to book your free place: hexham@museumsnorthumberland.org.uk, or telephone 01670 624523. Hexham Old Gaol is fully accessible and the talk will take place on the ground floor.
