Find within approx miles of Hexham Old Gaol

If you dare, visit Hexham Old Gaol, the oldest purpose built prison in England (c 1330) where you'll gain a fascinating insight into crime and punishment in medieval Northumberland.

For almost 500 years its thick walls held prisoners, but today, interactive displays on punishment, archeology, armour, costume and textiles as well as a vivid film about Border Reviers bring a violent era of Northumberland's history to life.

"Meet" the gaoler to find out more about how criminals were treated: he'll tell you about the Border Marches and the practice of pledges where hostages were held within the prison until fines were paid or the accused turned up for trial. Uncover the family feuds which resulted in so many violent and untimely deaths and explore some of the buildings the people of the Borders lived in.

The building is fully accessible with movement from the dungeon below to the upper floors via a glass lift.
