Will definitely return

We have just come home from an overnight stay, myself and 15 yr old daughter. It was lovely and relaxing. Dinner in linden tree pub was delicious and quite large portions, menu is quite limited though. Daughter loved the brownie dessert. Breakfast was nice, we often eat out for breakfast so this was pretty similar to other big chains, only downside was no water to drink just juices, personal choice we like water when eating. Room was large, well equipped and comfortable and clean. Pool and spa was relaxing but would have liked option to have drinks/coffee etc. We will definitely return.

Disappointed stay with rude general manager

joannelittle81, Newcastle, United Kingdom
Dear Complaints Manager I booked for a party of 6 for my sisters Hen Do to attend Linden Hall for a spa deal for the 7th April 2018 via your website. We had high expectations and booked this venue for a number of reasons, the first being the spa facilities this venue had a steam room, sauna, jacuzzi and pool along with a additional treatments. The second reason was the star rating and standard of not only the hotel but the spa too. On arrival there was a sign stating the steam room was out of order - which was disappointing but these things happen and I was told it was a recent issue. I would have liked to have been informed in the phone I received a couple of evenings before from the hotel. Little did I know until the Sunday that the steam room had been out of order for a number of weeks. A member of the party specificity requested I booked somewhere with a steam room as they don’t like the sauna. The treatments were included in the package 25minute massage or facials. A number of us were disappointed with the standard of the massage but also the length of them. Two of us only had approximately 15mins rather than the stated 25mins. This was addressed with the front of house manager at Linden Hall who told us she would share these issue with the spa manager. Upon checking out I asked the front of house manager if these issues had been addressed - the response as a simple no. Therefore I addressed the issue myself. The spa manager was understanding and apologised but there was no other treatments offered etc. The spa facilities themselves were also a little disappointing the changing area is tired, dated, the shower area were not the cleanest. There was only 8 loungers by the pool therefore we had to share two beds between us as there were other guests in the pool area for the size of the hotel the facilities were very small and we were extremely disappointed that we could lay and relax in the spa area. Rooms - we had three rooms in total all the same rate and price. When we checked in one of the rooms was significantly smaller than the others and we were told this room was a actual upgrade as the hotel was overbooked for classic /standard rooms. The smaller room was apparently a original room therefore it was classed as a upgrade. It was at least half the size and not what we purchased I requested this room was changed for the room type we originally booked . I was informed this was not a option as there were no other options. Restaurant booking - Linden Hall called us to take a table booking for the Linden Tree Bar. A table was reserved for 7pm for 6 people. We arrived and the staff member was extremely rude and told us we had only booked for 4 people. He rudely dragged over another table and shouted over to the kitchen staff informing there was 6 of us not 4. We were made to feel extremely uncomfortable. I can’t understand the issue as there were only another 2-3 tables in. We ordered and we waited 45-50 mins for our meals all burgers and fries. During this wait we’re laughing and giggling - pretty reserved for a hen party and the general manager walked over shaking his head at his and making a gesture for us to be quiet. We were not being disruptive we were simply just having a good time. We felt uncomfortable and we actually left the bar/pub area and went straight back to our rooms at approximately 9pm. We all feel that what we purchased and what we got actually got was not the same . We purchased a experience - the spa facilities were not all working and certainly were not 4*. The customer service was certainly not what we expected especially from a general manager. I did speak again to the front of house manager regarding our stay when we left in the Sunday and she assured me that she would be back in touch but it would be difficult to address the issues as it was regarding the general manager. I had NO contact from anyone from the hotel and spa. We spent just under £600 on rooms then at least another £200 on food and drinks. We left feeling very disappointed and let down. Save your money !

Lovely hotel and surroundings poor customer service

Kregor, Stalybridge
Was given a gift of an overnight stay DBB by our kids and decided to add another day to make it a long mid week break. We stayed 10/04/2018 and 11/04/2018 having previously stayed at this Hotel last year in May2017. The hotel itself has a charm reflecting nice period touches and whilst I do take on board other TripAdvisor comments that there are areas that do need updating overall it was spotless inside and inviting. We were given the same room we had last year (Room 9) and had no complaints whatsoever in terms of size and facilities. There was a super king size bed with two comfortable chairs and a table in the window with the usual benefits of an iron/board, tea and coffee making facilities , safe etc. etc. . We asked for fresh milk and firmer pillows and this was brought almost immediately to our room. We booked for the first night into the Dobson restaurant as per our previous visit. We were informed that we had a £25 contribution per person toward the meal which I was suprised to find just about covered a starter and a cheaper main course. We were given an appetiser of panacota cauliflower which was very nice and had a nice Mushroom rissotto starter , we had a lovely orange sorbet as a palate cleanser and we had lamb and cod respectively for our main meal. We had a lovely bottle of wine but passed on the sweet as nothing really grabbed our attention. The whole meal was around £80 for which we had to contribute £30 after our allowance. Overall all a pleasant experience with good food albeit a limited menu choice. Breakfast was a help yourself choice of cereals and continental breads and jams - disappointingly no butter on display. Lack of cheeses / meats etc made it a poor continental offering. Hot breakfast was however very nice. We were sat on both occasions near the tall windows and noticed the varnish on the inside and the paintwork on the outside on the two different windows were in desperate need of attention. Cobwebs around a few window panes was visible - did not affect me but this is a four star establishment? Given the limited choice and eager for a change of venue we opted to dine in the Linden Tree the next night - big mistake! We arrived and noticed just one waiter serving the whole pub for food , drinks and payment! We orderd a starter of flatbreads with sweet potato houmos and it was nice although the houmos could have done with a bit more seasoning. We both ordered the fish and chips and noticed our order was under the lights ready to be brought out almost as soon as the starters were served! When it came to our table the fish was luke warm and the chips were like wood chippings, the accompanying peas were cold! The chips felt as if they had been cooked hours before and had just been warmed up in the microwave. We mentioned this to the waiter when he came to collect the plates and noticed that most of the meals were uneaten ! He noted the complaint and said he would inform the Duty Manager and prceeded to bring our desserts - rushed ! When we went to settle the bill there was no adjsutment made for the uneaten meals, in fact we had gone £3.35 over the £50 allowance and with the bottle of wine I paid an extra £27.35, almost the same as the Dobson restaurant the night before. No gesture was made and no input from the Duty Manger - very poor for a four star establishment. I understand from the waiter that it was the same chef who prepares the meals for both restaurants - unbeliveable if true. I cannot belive that we paid almost £80 for a meal at a pub for fish and chips. I mentioned our unfortunate experience to Reception and was told it would be escalated to the General Manager. The spa facilities are excellent and we made good use of the wet facilities - highly recommend the steam room. At check out we were greeted by apologetice reception staff who said they had escalated the complaint to the General Manager but had no feedback for me. I checked out without any further comment as we had a long journey ahead of us. Overall a lovely hotel and staff are generally very friendly and courteous a special mention for Catherine at reception for her very accomodating and pleasant personality. Unfortunately I cannot give a higher rating than three stars for the lack of customer service on an issue that was never resolved by Management who chose not to make an appearance.

Great... but not a fan of the fan.

Andrew K,
I'll be brief... great place with lots of character, food was good and the staff were great. But for goodness sake, DO SOMETHING ABOUT THE NOISE OF THE KITCHEN EXTRACTOR FAN! Loved everything about this place until the kitchen got going at 06:30 somewhere just below our room: constant droning until 22:30 each night. Please, please, PLEASE MacDonald Hotels, invest in a new (quiet) extractor fan system... everything else is fine. Traveller - use this hotel, but ask for a room away from the kitchen. That is all.
