Kirknewton is Northumberland National Park's only conservation village. It's one of smallest Northumberland parishes when it comes to population, but one of the largest in its size. The stunning village lies almost hidden, nestled by surrounding hills and the remains of ancient hill forts.
The village also lies at the heart of the ancient Kingdom of Northumberland with the remains of the 6th Century Palace of Ad Gefrin nearby. Every year this magical place stages the annual league sheepdog trials in one of the village fields. Nearby in the village hall you'll find fantastic history displays and films about area.
This year's event on Sun Aug 18th also includes an arts and crafts fair in the Girl Guides Centre, which is right next to the hall. There'll be original art, prints, weaving, photography, jewellery, glass, bric-a-brac, children's activities and music. You can also learn to make your own silver ring, and see the weavers in action. Take your homemade cake and tea out into the garden and admire the stunning scenery. Admission is free.
