Illicit Whisky Walk - Wholehope Still, Coquetdale Valley

Join experienced local guide Birch alongside Ad Gefrin for a guided Illicit Whisky Walk into the heart of Coquetdale Valley, following ancient paths through one of Northumberland's most atmospheric landscapes.

We'll meet at the start in Coquetdale Valley for the Wholehope still, where the walk begins. From there, Birch will lead you through the valley, tracing the landscape where illicit whisky was once made and moved in secrecy, tucked into folds of land, shaped by water, weather, and necessity.

This is a journey through terrain and time. Along the way, you'll hear how the hills and burns once sheltered hidden stills, and how communities worked quietly within the landscape to survive and adapt. At the still site, we'll pause to reflect on the story of the place, enjoy hot drinks, and share a small tasting of Tácnbora Whisky Blend, connecting the past with the present spirit of Northumberland.

What to wear: Sturdy walking shoes and a waterproof raincoat are essential.  Some sections may be wet underfoot depending on conditions

Where to Meet & Parking: For the Illicit Whisky Walk to the Wholehope Still, please meet at the designated start point in Coquetdale Valley and not at Ad Gefrin.

This is the closest safe access point to the walk start. Please arrive a few minutes early to allow time for parking and preparation before the walk begins. Parking is available nearby along the roadside verge and designated lay-by areas. Please park considerately, keeping access clear for local residents, farm vehicles, and emergency access at all times.
From the meeting point, Birch will gather the group before setting off into the valley towards the Wholehope still site.
