This year the Front Room Exhibition features the Mills and Farms of the Spindlestone Estate and the Port of Waren.
Find out about ‘one of the best mills’ the engineer John Smeaton ever designed, and how the mill worked; the lives of its tenants; the use of the sea to supply the mill so avoiding road taxes; plans to set up a customs post at Waren; exports and imports to Budle; the area’s windmill threshing machine; and the impact of the railway.
Elsewhere in the Museum new displays chart: * the History of the Scotch Church and how it served the villagers 240 years, first as a place of worship, then as a War Memorial Hall and lastly as a Community Club, attracting people from all over the area to its dances; * the experiences of the men of Belford imprisoned by the Japanese between 1942 and 1945; * the Life of Bobby Brewis, Belford’s noted Jockey and Trainer; and * Eleanor Weatherly’s experiences at Outchester in 1804/5.
