Beautiful location, but lodge a bit tired

Mrs_Sybil_Fawlty, Stockton-on-Tees, United Kingdom
Visited the Wagtail lodge with my husband and 2 children aged 11 & 7. Upon arrival, we were greeted by the friendly owner who showed us to our lodge and upon first impressions we were very pleased. A welcome basket was waiting for us in the kitchen area and comprised of tea, coffee, marmalade and chutney amongst other essentials and a small jug of fresh milk was in the fridge and we thought these were a lovely touch. The location and aspect of the lodge was superb and very tranquil. Me and my 7 yr old daughter loved a bit of bird spotting from the hot tub and I saw my first flock of gold crests from the kitchen window! However, as we spent more time in the lodge, we began to notice it just seemed to be a little tired. I wouldn’t go as far as to say it wasn’t clean, as that would be incredibly unfair to the owners BUT, I feel a little more attention to detail would have made a real difference. It was clean, but it seemed ‘old’ clean. The bedside lamps were all quite dusty, as though it had been cleaned thoroughly after the last guests had left, but that it hadn’t been used again for a while until we arrived. Everywhere, and I mean everywhere there were tiny spiders dotted around and there were 2 very well established cobwebs in the en-suite with their own residents. I’m absolutely not a clean freak and I certainly would not be so naive as to expect a rural site to be bug free, but a quick whizz around with a duster or a tickle stick before we arrived would’ve resolved the majority of what we saw. Outside the lodge and very noticeable from the hot tub were old cobwebs all around the lights and doors, again something as easy an old damp sweeping brush and a quick brush down would have eradicated this. Overall, we did love the location of the site and the lodge itself but just felt that it fell short of what we normally would expect.

Nice little site

ccgreig, Bourne, United Kingdom
Visited here with our tourer, 2 boys and 2 labradors. Really friendly site with some fabulous walks straight off into the forest. Distances to things are quite large and you are warned when you book about this. Showers are functional with very hot water, though the water pressure can be a bit variable which does affect the temperature! The pitches are absolutely dead pan flat and a small river runs at the bottom of the site which dogs and children paddle in during nice weather. A number of static vans and seasonal pitches mean that there is a ready community.

Peaceful and Beautiful

Meander727482,
A quiet park with peace and quiet - a great escape from the "madding crowds". Spent 4 lovely nights here - just what we needed to switch off.Fantastic cycling in the area. Weather cool but sunny. Early morning frosts -4C !!. Booked to go back hope the temperature is kinder. Loved the pigs and ponies.

Lovely Dog friendly Break

markjohne2014, Consett, United Kingdom
Myself and my partner had the pleasure of staying in the “Little Owl Lodge” with our pooch on the weekend of October 16th and had a lovely stay, there’s a small enclosed garden on the lodge for your dog to wander in safely as you relax in the sunken hot tub on the lovely decking area, the lodge is very well equipped and spacious and the walks leading directly off from the site are really great, whether you want to trek up into the forests or take a leisurely stroll along the riverside you’ll be surrounded by beautiful scenery. Check in was quick and an absolute pleasure, we were made very welcome and had a nice chat which included a rundown of what’s available in the surrounding area and a quick tour of your lodge including hot tub instruction 👍🏼, thank you for a lovely stay and we will definitely return 😊.

Great spot

G178JPbrianm,
Lovely and quiet campsite, if you like being out of the way, great walks straight out of site, suitable for off road mountain bikes too. Nice location for forest drive to keilder water. My 2 daughters loved feeding the pigs day and night on the site. Plenty of space between vans too.
