Midges might put you off

Matthew C, Manchester, United Kingdom
An OK site that we used as a base for Northumberland tour in our campervan. Mainly set up for cabins and statics. Small shower block was clean but lacked anywhere to sit down or a shelf to put anything. The drain was away from shower toward where you might change. Not great. Water hot not busy as most people seemed to use their own facilities. Microwave and fridge freezer in small washing up hut was good idea. List of dos and don'ts on site was extensive mainly around dogs and rowdy behaviour I guess to keep site quiet. No bar, shop or amenities.

Doggy Paradise

debhibbert1, Nottinghamshire, United Kingdom
We spent the weekend in Puffin Cottage with out 12 week old cockerpoo. The cabin was new this year and still in pristine condition. It was extremely well equipped, except for a lack of glassware, with all the usual and even a slow cooker. The oven didn’t look like it had ever been used. There was a welcome tray with sufficient tea and sugar to last the whole weekend, dish cloths, washing up liquid, kitchen towel, toilet roll all provided. Even binoculars and a book detailing the stars for a dark sky experience. We were made very welcome on arrival, especially our puppy . The site was very well kept with a few cabins, mobile homes (most privately owned), camping pods and tourers. It isn’t large and not busy at all whilst we were there. We picked this park because it boasted walks from the cabin door and as our pup wakes up early we wanted to be able to walk without having to get in the car. It did not disappoint with a fabulous walk beside a stream and into the forest, plus part of the Penine Way goes right by the gate. It seemed you could walk for miles but we couldn’t take advantage with such a young dog. We will be going back when he is older. The owner did warn me that the park was in the middle of nowhere and to make sure we had plenty of fuel in the car as the nearest petrol station was 17 miles away. We didn’t see a petrol station anywhere after leaving the A1 except in the pretty village of Bellingham. The petrol here was 16p a litre more than we usually pay but to be expected. The nearest shop is in Otterburn which is approx 9 miles away, so don’t forget anything! Apparently Tesco and ASDA do deliver but I’ve no idea where they would come from. The park is on the edge of Kielder Forest and the visitor centres are well worth a visit. The views are spectacular and everywhere you look is national forest. But everywhere seems to be a 20 to 30 minute drive. If you like walking, especially with a dog then this place is brilliant. We will definitely be returning

Podtastic

Emma O,
I booked a pod here for a couple of days break and was really.pleased with the size of decking, views and picnic table just outside. There are good facilities with a clean kitchen area and toilets next to the pods and a shower block at the top of the small site. These are not "state of the art" but have a sink for washing clothes (or babies), a disabled chair and hairdryer. 2 of the shower rooms have a loo and basin in and there are an additional 2 shower cubicles. The kitchen has a large fridge freezer, microwave and 2 sinks with plenty of washing up liquid from previous guests as well as a range of books and DVDs. There is plenty of rubbish bins, waste disposal and all the requirements of touring vans, statics etc. Best of all we hired our pod and were not charged any extra for bringing our three dogs. There are strict rules about picking up after your dog and keeping them tethered which is fair enough. All dogs should be controlled for the safety of people and other animals!! They loved having a swim in the river and we enjoyed the walks, birds, deer and bats but not the midges!! Remember this site is on the outskirts of pine forest and is great for midge so come prepared!! Sprays and repellent help but just go in your accomodation and shut the door and voila... you can watch them trying to get in through the glass windows like little tiny zombies lol. (You don't go to the lake District without a good set of waterproofs, do you?) There are no shops on site so come prepared but if you are looking for a tranquil, picturesque campsite you've hit gold here!!

break away

You were met with a warm welcome off the site owner, who explained the rules of the site especially if you had dogs which we agreed totally. As they have live stock wondering about and the chickens love to come and see you. Great walks from site and lonely river walk to let the dogs swim.very dog friendly. Met some lovely seasonal people and tourers. Very quiet and relaxing . Well kept site. And will be back.we were in a caravan .
