Great Traditional B&B

Ewa J, Newcastle upon Tyne, United Kingdom
Ideally located for walking the Northumberland Coastal Path (it's literally on the route). There was 6 of us and we had 2 rooms that slept 3 each. Both rooms were comfortable and had what looked like freshly renovated bathrooms. The breakfast room had cakes, herbal teas, drinks and fresh milk available to guests all day, so this was a nice touch that you don't get everywhere. This was in addition to the tea/coffee making facilities in the rooms. The guesthouse has a great residents' lounge that looks like something out of Sherlock Holmes :-) It was a useful space to have a chat and relax if you are in a larger group. The owner Janice was very friendly and welcoming. Breakfast in the morning was fine, not exceptional but hit the spot.

Great breakfast in a perfect location

Nigel C, Newcastle upon Tyne, United Kingdom
A lovely welcome and a large, although slightly dated, room on the ground floor. Great view of the river, excellent breakfast and great location for exploring the area. Good local pubs (Red Lion best - book if you want food and don't miss the fantastic beer garden overlooking the river) and great restaurants (Hooked - book if you want a fantastic meal)

A tranquil retreat following a torried experience

We found Westlea having booked The dreadful Schooner where we decided we simply could not stay! Paul was very helpful and we opted to take the room at the back of the house which was spacious and well furnished. The tea and coffee in the room were replenished daily, and the towels and linen good quality. The smoked salmon with scrambled egg at breakfast was delicious, as was the smoked fish which my husband had on a couple of occasions. Compared to the alternative, Westlea was a massive improvement and excellent for a B&B. The onsite parking was a real bonus. Overall we enjoyed our stay and Paul and Janice could not have done more for us.

Nick R,
I'm sure Janice tries really hard to be welcoming to her guests but oh my gosh, what seems to be her ritual of going through every detail of what you want for breakfast and where everything is within minutes of your arrival, is trying to say the least. We had walked 18 miles to get there and all we wanted was to flop but we weren't shown to our room for a good half hour before every single aspect of the guest house had been pointed out to us. I have to be honest, the place stank. We opened windows but there was a distinct smell which was very off-putting. The bin in our bathroom hadn't been emptied and was full of tissues left from the previous occupant and the toilet hadn't been cleaned properly so what with the over-riding smell, we weren't filled with excitement about our one night stay. The following morning, the cooked breakfast was dry and over done - obviously not freshly cooked - and to add insult to injury, when we got back to our room, we found the sheets had been stripped off our beds before we had even checked out. That's a first!! So, would we recommend this guest house??? Absolutely not. It was dreadful!

Short visit

We were very pleased to be able to book a place only a few days before and found Janice the owner very accommodating to us. Our first room (we had to swap after one night) was lovely with a balcony overlooking the river and was very comfortable. Our second was disappointing - having the same view with a Velux window/balcony. The main disappointment was having our 'en suite' outside the room! The shower here wasn't brilliant and the soap dispenser hardly flowing at all. One window wouldn't shut fully (over the bed) so in the storm and rain that we experienced, my husband slept badly, with a draught all night. There were marks on the bedding (stains not dirt) which is a bit off putting. The selection at breakfast was good - lovely fresh fruit! The cooked breakfast didn't have a lot of taste. The staff on the whole were friendly. We were charged the same amount for each night whereby our two night room was far inferior and at just short of £100 I felt it was a bit steep. Janice provides cakes and fresh milk in the dining room if you want to help yourself. The lounge is beautifully presented also with a balcony. So a mixed bag of good and not so good.
