An utter gem

Nizzlepizzle,
Absolutely incredible. Wonderful location, wonderful hosts and wonderful food. I really miss the gigantic bed already. Gutted we had plans so couldn't book in for dinner but we will certainly make sure we do next time. Would love to come back with 2 other couples and take over all 3 rooms together (but maybe I love the peace too much...)

What a find!

Just to say if you want to experience the wonder of the Northumberland countryside and history you couldn't choose a better place. Warm, cozy, comfortable with an exceptional view from the huge glass fronted "lodge" - Kevin and Sophie were exemplary hosts for 6 of us for New Years Eve. (Not sure if it would have been the same being in close proximity had we not all known one another, however!) But for a place to really enjoy the wildness of the area in comfort it was perfect. A warm and friendly welcome and nothing was too much trouble. Thanks for a memorable stay!

Laid Back Layside

Just returned from a wonderful little break at this delightful B and B. Layside takes all the things you don't like about conventional B and Bs, and flips them on their head. The room was immaculate, the surroundings incredible, beds luxurious and very comfortable, bedlinens and towels amazing. The owner went out of his way to make us feel welcome... nothing was too much trouble. The breakfast was absolutely delicious.... I would highly recommend the pancakes and the cassoulet. The best thing about Layside is the attention to detail.... We could even see Sycamore Gap in the distance! Hopefully we will be back soon.

Wonderful!

All the basics were top quality luxury - beds, bedding and decor were excellent. The situation is lovely in the middle of the country side with floor to ceiling glass windows. You can walk straight from the door. After a day of walking; to come back to such a cosy and comfortable base with a homely delicious meal served in the room was a complete treat.

Very comfortable and a welcoming experience

ShaneBattAuthor, Island of Malta, Malta
I stayed two days last week at the Layside while walking Hadrian's Wall with my daughter. The accommodations are very comfortable, clean, nicely presented and a perfect retreat after a hard day on the trail. We arrived just before a rainstorm to be met by Kevin who soon had a wonderful meal for us and some great local ales and cider. It raised our spirits and convinced us to keep pressing forward on our trek. One of the best things about Layside is its proximity to Vindolanda. We spent a wonderful afternoon at the Roman site in the museum and also watching the excavations. Kevin and Sophie were very considerate and hospitable. Kevin particularly went out of his way to make us feel welcome. Kevin is a calm influence and full of local knowledge. One top tip: if you are walking the Wall and Kevin offers you a ride to the car park at Steel Rig, take it! It will save you at least 90 minutes of hard walking uphill. I would recommend Layside as an excellent base for anyone in the region. It is absolutely first rate!
