Holmhead Guest House sits in a beautifully quiet location in a sheltered valley next to the Tipalt Burn and beneath the ruins of Thirlwall Castle.  Built in 1800 with Wall stone, the house is bordered by open fields and has stunning views south towards the North Pennines, whilst to the north lies the Northumberland National Park and Thirlwall Castle. Holmhead is built over the foundations of Hadrian’s Wall and is directly on the Pennine Way and Hadrian’s Wall National Trails.

All rooms have great views, have ensuite shower and wc and tea and coffee-making facilities. Our breakfasts are delicious and generous and use local produce wherever possible, including free-range eggs, Northumberland sausage and bacon. Special diets are not a problem (although we do prefer advanced notice where possible) There is a large guest lounge with Freesat TV and DVD, bookshelves and games and complimentary wi-fi

Our location, directly on The Hadrian’s Wall Path and Pennine way make us an ideal stop-off for walkers, and we’re only 250m off the Hadrian’s Wall Cycle Trail. For evening meals, there’s a local pub which is a pleasant half-mile stroll away and serves great food and real ales.

For those staying for longer breaks, we’re ideally situated for exploring all the Hadrian’s Wall sites and museums, the North Pennines, Lake District, Tyne, Wear and Tees Dales, The Northumberland National Park and the stunning coastlines. We’re only about an hour’s drive from Newcastle and about half an hour from Carlisle.

There are a number of local walks, either along the national trail or local circular walks through some of the most spectacular (and peaceful) scenery in the country. We’re always happy to help with advice or map loans wherever possible.

At Holmhead, we can also offer self-catering accommodation in our two-bedroom cottage or, for backpackers and cyclists on a budget, we offer camping barn facilities.

Hadrian’s Wall is a World Heritage Site. It crosses from coast to coast of Northern England for 73 Miles, and is a breathtaking sight. Our bed and breakfast accommodation near Hadrian’s Wall also contains stones obtained from the wall.

You can visit long stretches of remaining wall; archaeological excavations of the wall and its eight remaining forts along the route, there are also 11 museums. Most are open all year.

Excellent place to start our Hadrian's Wall walk

verandah2, London, United Kingdom
We stayed at the Holmhead Guest House at the beginning of our two day Hadrian's Wall Walk. A very warm welcome; the bedrooms were a good size, spotlessly clean and very comfortable. There was also a guest sitting / dining room where we sat with our friends before going to dinner (we were the only guests that night). We ate at the local pub a 15 minute walk away across a field - take a torch with you - and the food and service was splendid. Breakfast next morning was excellent and the owners of the House were very friendly and chatty and informative about the area. The Hadrian's Wall path goes right behind the Guest house so it could not be a more convenient place to start your walk. Wifi was available in the sitting room.

B and B

Susan Y,
Visit to northern england/hadrian path wall country. Very idyllic setting at end of road next to stream, pasture with grazing sheep from bedroom window and views castle ruins from from kitchen dining area. One block walk to pub that had great food for dinner. Gracious hosts, made to order breakfast and very comfortable room on the wall path. Private, quiet, super lovely. By far my overall favorite on the week long trip. I would stay there again in a heartbeat!

A wonderful place to stay

This B&B is right on the Hadrian's Wall walk. A perfect place to stay. There is a great pub for your evening meal at the end of the drive (although the drive is quarter of a mile long). The facilities were great. A guest lounge is a real perk in a B&B. The owners were so welcoming and friendly. The breakfast was super and they catered for a gluten free diet brilliantly. The packed lunches were also awesome. My only niggle was the beds in one of our rooms. They seemed to be slightly smaller than regular single beds, but the rest was so good I'd definitely stay there again, even in those beds!!

Lovely self-catering cottage

Very pretty, comfortable cottage in an ideal location for walking Hadrian's Wall and visiting the area. We enjoyed sitting in the lovely private garden. The hosts were very friendly, welcoming and helpful. This accommodation is excellent value for money. We hope to return!

Perfect holiday, perfect cottage.

Stayed in the Cottage for our holiday. Absolutely lovely cottage and in a great location for all the Hadrians Wall sites (that and your actually staying on the wall!! Can't get much better than that!!). Judy and Alan are fantastic owners always checking that we were okay, we had an 8 month old with us and they had the travel cot ready for us and lots of spare blankets for him, really lovely people. Views from Holmhead are amazing. Amazing place and will come back again to explore more once our little boy is older.
