Holmhead Guest House sits in a beautifully quiet location in a sheltered valley next to the Tipalt Burn and beneath the ruins of Thirlwall Castle.  Built in 1800 with Wall stone, the house is bordered by open fields and has stunning views south towards the North Pennines, whilst to the north lies the Northumberland National Park and Thirlwall Castle. Holmhead is built over the foundations of Hadrian’s Wall and is directly on the Pennine Way and Hadrian’s Wall National Trails.

All rooms have great views, have ensuite shower and wc and tea and coffee-making facilities. Our breakfasts are delicious and generous and use local produce wherever possible, including free-range eggs, Northumberland sausage and bacon. Special diets are not a problem (although we do prefer advanced notice where possible) There is a large guest lounge with Freesat TV and DVD, bookshelves and games and complimentary wi-fi

Our location, directly on The Hadrian’s Wall Path and Pennine way make us an ideal stop-off for walkers, and we’re only 250m off the Hadrian’s Wall Cycle Trail. For evening meals, there’s a local pub which is a pleasant half-mile stroll away and serves great food and real ales.

For those staying for longer breaks, we’re ideally situated for exploring all the Hadrian’s Wall sites and museums, the North Pennines, Lake District, Tyne, Wear and Tees Dales, The Northumberland National Park and the stunning coastlines. We’re only about an hour’s drive from Newcastle and about half an hour from Carlisle.

There are a number of local walks, either along the national trail or local circular walks through some of the most spectacular (and peaceful) scenery in the country. We’re always happy to help with advice or map loans wherever possible.

At Holmhead, we can also offer self-catering accommodation in our two-bedroom cottage or, for backpackers and cyclists on a budget, we offer camping barn facilities.

Hadrian’s Wall is a World Heritage Site. It crosses from coast to coast of Northern England for 73 Miles, and is a breathtaking sight. Our bed and breakfast accommodation near Hadrian’s Wall also contains stones obtained from the wall.

You can visit long stretches of remaining wall; archaeological excavations of the wall and its eight remaining forts along the route, there are also 11 museums. Most are open all year.

Such a beautiful place on Hadrian's wall path. The village of Greenhead is less than 10mins walk from the camp site and a stop in at the exceptional Greenhead hotel is a must for breakfast lunch and dinner serving excellent food with plenty of top quality vegan options too. We camped here and it was wonderful to stay beside a beautiful 15th century castle ruins. However, there were a couple of things that you should note if you intend on camping here. Firstly the garden area is very sloped and small for tents and is entirely in the shade (mid June)which is a problem for damp and cold in a tent! Also there was an abundance of midges nipping at us for the night and swarms of them descended on the garden in the evening til morning making it impossible to breathe without inhaling them by the hundreds...this was most uncomfortable and seemed to still be a big problem in the morning too. Having said that the owner did mention it and apologised on natures behalf!Lastly the toilet/wetroom is more of a tiny shed almost portaloo sized and difficult to bring any clothes in with you never mind change into them!having said that hot water was in abundance which is a real bonus. If you can tolerate the shade and morning dampness and the insane amount of biting midges this is a great place to stop especially at the bargain rate of £10 for the 2 of us. The owner is also very friendly and most welcoming too.

Great hosts, great garden lucked out on mattress comfort

Vasymon, Ottawa, Canada
We had a welcoming stay. I don't remember the room number we had, but it was very small, it was therefore hard to find space other than the bed for access to our luggage. The private bathroom was very clean as was the whole B&B. the only negative point is the mattress in that room was not comfortable. But we forgot all about it with the guests nice breakfast and interesting conversations. They have a lovely garden and a perfect location when walking Hadrian's Wall.

Look forward to our return

This was our second stay at Holmhead and we were so glad to come again. As before, our hosts treated us like VIPs. The full English breakfasts were delicious and cooked to order. The sliced fresh fruit was not needed but enjoyed. The setting is perfect. Previously, we have walked, given the ideal location, but on this short visit, we went to Carlisle for the poppy installation at the castle and did some shopping too. Our room was spotless, mattress comfortable, sheets ironed, tea setup just right, bathroom/shower just right as well. View from room beautiful. Can’t wait to return!

A wonderful holiday cottage

We are just coming to the end of a wonderful holiday in this lovely cottage. We have been really comfortable here and the setting is so gorgeous with a castle ruins a few minutes walk away, a lovely view from the living room and the Hadrians wall path just outside the back of the cottage. We even had our own private garden. Very friendly and helpful owners too with lots of thought put into the cottage to make it a home from home. So much to see and do in the nearby area especially walks and visits to Roman sites. We loved it so much we hope to return soon.

Beautiful B&B and great welcome

Can’t recommend this B&b highly enough, great host, helpful and room comfortable, good shower, breakfast etc pub nearby. Great place to stay for Hadrian’s wall walk or pennine way. Really nice place, and on the route.
