Overview

WELCOME to HENSHAW BARN - a beautiful rustic building deep in the heart of Hadrians Wall country.

During its agricultural life the barn provided storage space for hay and welcome shelter for cattle, now it is a much loved family home for Pauline and John and their two setters.

The focus throughout the barn conversion has been to remain true to the strength and simplicity of the building. Original A-frame beams have been preserved, and french oak beams added to the ground floor. Beautiful oak doors add warmth to the exposed stone, whilst a huge wood burning stove is an additional enhancement. Furniture is predominantly country pine and oak, complemented by opulent fabrics, and squashy sofas smothered in cushions.

Modern amenities matter:- The marriage of the old with the new arises with the installation throughout of super efficient under floor heating; fabulous power showers; ample hot water; wonderfully comfortable beds; snuggly duvets and quality linen; luscious toiletries; and the  luxury of fluffy towels and cosy bathrobes.

As an added enticement chef John provides fresh, locally sourced, seasonal food.. wholesome and substantial breakfasts, and very delicious evening meals....designed to excite the eye and please the palate.

Henshaw Barn is within walking distance of all the major heritage attractions, including the Roman forts of Housesteads and Vindolanda. Annual excavations continue to unearth precious and often priceless artefacts, all of which can be seen in the museums dotted along the length of the Wall.

The picturesque market towns of Hexham and Corbridge lie 12 miles along the Tyne Valley, and are home to delights such as Hexham Abbey, traditional farmers markets and a host of unique independent shops. Great historic houses and castles pepper the region, with beautiful beaches, wild stretches of coast and our magnificent National Park, all within easy reach.

Friendly Welcome

geriatricbackpacker2, England, United Kingdom
Initially greeted with home made scones and tea. Every little need provided for from our hospitable hosts. The food was excellent and chef John produced a lovely dinner party when friends joined us one evening. Highly recommended.

Absolutely lovely, the reviews don't lie

tdd1907,
I stayed at Henshaw Barn for over a week on a work trip. Firstly Pauline was extremely understanding and held the room for me while I finalised my plans, then John picked me up from the train station. The service only went uphill from there--scones with homemade jam and tea upon my arrival, two very friendly dogs, an absolutely gorgeous room with breathtaking views, a cheeky glass of wine before dinner... I cannot say enough about the kindness and generosity Pauline and John showed me. They constantly offered me rides and John even made a special dinner that was one of the highlights of the trip! The food was absolutely outstanding and one of the reasons why I originally decided to stay with them. The reviews raving about John's cooking don't lie. The variety at breakfast and dinner are fantastic and many vegetables are taken right out of their garden. Staying and chatting with them was extremely comfortable, almost like visiting one's family. I can't recommend Henshaw Barn enough. In fact I'll be returning next year with my husband so he can experience it firsthand! Thank you both for such a relaxing trip. I enjoyed every minute of it.

Hospitality and Wondeful Food

Chazzerbazzer,
Pauline and John made every effort possible to help 4 weary cyclist enjoy a night out of the wind and the rain. A lovely place for walkers or cyclists to get a nights relaxation and some fine dining. John is a professional chef, enjoying what he does so well... a great diner, followed by a wonderful breakfast, including the finest kippers..... just beware if you are going West to East, its a bit of a shock the climb out to the wall after such a substantial breakfast. Thanks so much....

Unique and superb

Nigel S,
Pauline and John are the perfect hosts. We stayed here 2 years ago and recently returned for a 3 night stay for my wife’s birthday. We were privileged to discover that although they wer officially closed, they were happy to see us again. John’s cooking is amazing. Everything was perfect. Can’t recommend too highly.

Fabulous in every respect

Misti66, Isle of Man, United Kingdom
I stayed at Henshaw Barn in November 2018 for 5 nights whilst I visited my daughter who lives nearby. Pauline and John were the perfect hosts and from the moment I arrived I felt at home. The accommodation is absolutely excellent; beautiful, comfortable, spotlessly clean and with great thought given to the furnishings and amenities. I really had absolutely everything I needed. John is an amazing professional chef and the breakfasts provided are just fantastic.. the best Eggs Benedict I have ever eaten! I was sorry that I didn’t have the time to sample the evening menu as it looked fabulous. John and Pauline made me feel so welcome and took time to chat with me each evening when I returned. I really felt as if I was staying with friends. I would thoroughly recommend Henshaw Barn, and am already planning a return visit. Thank you Pauline and John, you are fabulous! See you soon :)
