Nothing was too much trouble

Kodachrome25, Manchester
The hostess, Denise, looked after us extremely well. We stayed for one night during a walking holiday. The house was spotlessly clean, but, more to the point, Denise and her colleagues were friendly, helpful and efficient. We had hoped to dine in the evening at Brookside Villa but as Denise was not cooking she booked us a table at a nearby pub (where the food was good). Denise put on a good and varied breakfast table.

Tucked Away Gem

Winding up around the bend from the town is a lovely B&B which provided a restful evening off the trail. Denise was a wonderful host who make us feel welcome and took care of dinner reservations in town for us. The room was a bit tight but the bed was quite comfortable and the bathroom had a good hot shower. There was a comfortable living room with an honesty bar. It was nice to relax and sip some wine before going to dinner. In the morning Denise made a plentiful breakfast and provided thoughtful advice about the trail ahead.

Great place to stay in Gilsland

Doppes, Ghent, Belgium
Denise makes sure everything is clear and is very precise, while still being friendly and welcoming. Some here seem to call this military-like, but honestly, after a long hike I am thankful that everything is clear and I don't need to use my sun-baked brain any more than I need to. At arrival, Denise explained everything, showed us the rooms and informed us when she had booked a table for us in the local pub. The lounge (with honesty bar) is very welcoming and the garden is beautiful. Denise arranges pickup and drop off when you stay more than one night. On the last day of our stay, It was going to be a very hot day so Denise offered to get us dropped off as soon as possible so we could enjoy the cool of the morning while hiking. When we explained that one of our companions wouldn't do the walk that day and take a bus, she offered to let Gerry drop her of in the nearby station instead, which was very appreciated. Denise & Gerry are very welcoming, helpful people and I would advise to book here if you're planning to stay the night in Gilsland.

Wonderful place

Denise is a very kind and helpful host with many tips on what to do in the area. The house and the rooms are tastefully decorated, modern yet cosy. Room 5 had all we needed, including little details like a fan, a lovely, modern bathroom with a strong shower, and a big and comfortable bed. Both our evening meal and breakfast were absolutely delicious. Such a shame that we could only stay for one night.

A warm welcome in a beautiful location.

On arrival, my friend and I were greeted by concerned owner Denise, who had expected us sooner. A combination of the distractions of Lanercost Priory (and its tea-room), Birdoswald Roman Fort and my fellow Wall-walker's shin splints may have had something to do with our late arrival! Denise's concern reflects the 'duty of care' policy that she and co-owner Gerry have towards their transient guests. Denise guided us upstairs to our quarters for the night, and it was just what our fatigued selves had hoped for, a large, clean and airy room with a nice en-suite shower, comfy beds and complementary tea and biscuits, which didn't last long! The downstairs living room has a section displaying wines, beers, water, crisps and biscuits, and more. It operates on an 'honesty tab' basis, you make a note of what you have taken, and square up on the morning of departure. Too tempting to ignore, we spent the evening at the table on the paved area in the secluded front garden, enjoying the sunset whilst sampling the beer and Prosecco on offer! Following an excellent breakfast (Denise offers a very comprehensive list to her guests of what is on offer) Gerry very kindly offered to drive us to the starting point of our next section of Wall walk. This was very much appreciated, and he offered plenty of tips and hints on the day's hill trek ahead, which gave us a great start. Thank you Denise and Gerry for you welcome and advice, and for helping with my friend's shin splints, it was just a shame that we could stay only for one night.
