At Wild Dog Outdoors we focus on the historical and cultural development of North England.  We offer guided tours, walking tours, educational sessions for schools, museums and events.  We also specialise in primitive living skills and take bushcraft to a whole new level by examining the origins of survival skills.  Our primary interests are in the early cultures of Britain.

Explore the stone monuments left to us by our ancient ancestors.  Discover the Celtic cultures that occupied these lands before the Romans arrived.  Unearth the secrets of Hadrian's Wall.  See the heritage left to us by the Saxons and Normans.  Learn what it meant to be a 'borderer' in medieval Northumberland.  Ultimately, uncover how the legacy of all these cultures still shapes the world we live in today.

Knowledgeable and accessible - highly recommended.

Our trip with Kevin was excellent. He tailored it to suit us (our particular request was to take in the Mithraic Temple at Brocolitia), and his knowledge of the history of the site and general area is encyclopaedic, but he has the ability to put it across in a very accessible way. A particular highlight was feeling the difference between the Celtic sword and the Roman gladius (he brought replicas with him), illustrating the difference in the 2 cultures. We visited several sites on our own after our trip with him, and enjoyed them much more because of our experience with him. And his recommendation to visit Aydon Castle on our last day was spot on - it hadn't featured at all in our planning (clearly Google has its limits), but was wonderful.

Wild Dog Outdoors replied: Thank you very much for taking the time to write such a lovely review. I am happy to hear that you enjoyed your tour and your visits to other local sites! We hope to welcome you back to Northumberland again in the future! Best wishes, Kevin

Wild Dog Outdoor Tour was the highlight of our whole trip

DemiDee777, East Midlands, United Kingdom
If you have a bucket list of things you want to do before you die, a Wild Dog Outdoor Tour should definitely be on your list. I treated an archaeology graduate to the Stone Circles tour and both he and I were captivated from beginning to end. In fact, even though we stayed at Northumberland's Langley Castle in glorious surroundings, it was the tour provided by Wild Dog Outdoors that was the highlight of our trip. From the moment Emma collected us from our residence, to the moment she dropped us off at the train station, she and Joe exceeded all expectations and went above and beyond to ensure our day was as magnificent as the stunning views we encountered along the way. Kevin paired us perfectly with enthusiastic and hugely knowledgeable archaeologist, Joe Jackson. From the moment we met Joe at the first location, it was clear that his knowledge about the stone circle sites would add to our limited knowledge of these areas, and his presentation was such that it had me captivated all day too, which is no mean feat considering that, unlike the gift's recipient, I tend to fall asleep at the mere mention of the word 'history'! Joe's ability to weave in humour while imparting the necessary facts in a way that is conducive to the audience is a rare skill that he has mastered so well that he makes learning fun, and each step of the fascinating journey unfolded in such a way that neither of us wanted the day to end. From the mysterious Long Meg and Her Daughters to the amazing Mayburgh Henge and through to Castlerigg stone circle, these monuments are steeped in history that can only be fully enjoyed through years of study, or an excellent tour guide who's done the hard work for you. September can be precarious as far as weather goes, and yet we felt blessed as we experienced a day of sunshine in the competent hands of such a knowledgeable guide whose love of his job is infectious. Indeed, his commitment to ensuring every step of the day was both fascinating, fun and enjoyable has left us with memories we'll cherish forever. Even before we reached any of the stone circles, Emma drove us through the stunning Eden Valley, stopping at a perfect vantage point so that we could capture the best of this glorious part of the world. And, speaking of exceeding expectations, two hours after the tour's scheduled end, Emma was just dropping us off at the train station most convenient to us, having spent time driving us via another scenic route so that we could see Hadrian's Wall before our return home, where we were treated to an email containing some additional photos of the areas we had visited! We will be sure to recommend Wild Dog Outdoors far and wide. Suffice to say no words could sufficiently encapsulate what a wonderful day we both had. Sometimes 'thank you' just isn't enough. This is one of those times.

Wild Dog Outdoors replied: Dear Dee, Thank you so much for taking the time to write such a glowing review! We all feel very humbled by your kind words. We hope to see you both again in the future! Very best wishes, Kevin

Hadrian's Wall tour

Philip C, Romsey, United Kingdom
We spent a day with Kevin who knows everything worth knowing about his subject and enthusiastically shared a lot of it with us. I think we expected to do a little more walking along the wall but it was a very enjoyable day. This tour was arranged for us as part of a package by McKinlay Kidd.

Wild Dog Outdoors replied: Thank you for your kind review. It was a pleasure showing you Hadrian's Wall and the Roman Fort. We will be delighted to show you more of the area when you return.

A Refreshing Perspective

Two of us had a private tour with Kevin to inform my father"s archeology course. He was excellent, and extremely knowledgable, giving us real insight into the Celts, Romans and the wall itself. A great day and highly recommended.

Wild Dog Outdoors replied: It was a pleasure to show you Hadrian's Wall. Your enthusiasm for the subject was incredible. We can look at the Medieval castles when you return. Best wishes, Kevin
