Couple walking by the sea in Berwick upon Tweed, Northumberland

The Lowry Trail in Northumberland

Step into history
L S Lowry (1887 - 1976) visited the town of Berwick many times from the mid-1930's until the summer before he died. The Berwick Lowry Trail identifies the sites of many of his finest paintings and drawings of the town.

Walking in the footsteps of L.S. Lowry

Wander along river banks, towards striking Spittal beach and back to Berwick’s cobbled town centre on The Lowry Trail. While you walk, you will take in Berwick’s romantic, riverside views, pass art galleries and museums, and admire stunning stretches of coastline.

Laurence Stephen Lowry (1887-1976) is famous for his 'matchstick men' paintings of industrial scenes, factories and back-to-back terraced houses of Manchester and the North West. His lesser known works of cobbled streets and seaside scenes in Berwick-upon-Tweed were created while he holidayed here from the mid-1930's to the Summer before his death in 1976.

The Lowry Trail follows in the footsteps of the great 'matchstick men' painter and allows visitors to experience some of the hidden gems of the town, which Lowry discovered on his many holidays in Berwick.

The route begins in Berwick, which Lowry first travelled to by steam train in the 1930s! Take the steps down from the station through Castlevale and Coronation Parks and onto the riverside. Take in views of the three bridges spanning the River Tweed, including Stevenson's Royal Border Bridge.

Keep to the Riverside until you reach Berwick's Old Bridge, then head along Bridge Street to Dewar's Lane, the first point on the Lowry Trail.

Follow the Lowry Trail around Berwick town, popping in to see contemporary art at the Gymnasium Gallery and then crossing the river to Tweedmouth. Stop at the Dockside Gallery displaying original artworks as well as gifts, cards and paintings for sale. Continue along to Spittal, to enjoy views of the sea while strolling on the promenade.
