From the Moon to Mars and Jupiter - hear from experts and follow their telescope as it hunts out deep space objects! Bellingham Club Site is located 0.75 miles outside Bellingham village, within the Northumberland Dark Skies Park, the largest Gold Tier dark skies area in Europe.

By popular demand, we are holding another Spring Star Camp to supplement our main Star Camp in December each year. The March Star Camp (the 5th such camp we have held) is very similar, hosted by Rob Ince, a very enthusiastic astronomer who ensures there are least 2 large telescopes on site all weekend. He kicks off the event on Friday evening with a talk just after 7pm, followed by night skies observation. He helps us navigate the night sky, viewing galaxies, nebula, star clusters and more. March 18th, although not offically, is the actual equinox in the North East, with 12 hrs daylight and 12 hrs night. To celebrate the Equinox, we will hope to see an exceptional Spring night sky. Mars is on the low western horizon early evening. Jupiter (and its moons) makes an appearance late-on and the moon starts to rise just before midnight on the 17th (later on the 18th), giving us an added opportunity to explore its surface through a scope, having enjoyed the darkness its absence allows up until then.

Why a Star Camp? No other astronomical experience allows for more observation. You have 2 whole evenings during which astronomers will be on alert for clear skies, optimising the opportunity for seeing objects you may never have seen before. You might even be lucky and see an aurora should one occur. However, it is also possible that we are not blessed with clear skies. Last March we were fortunate on the 2nd night (despite the forecast which led one or two people to cancel - the forecast stil claimed it was cloudy when the heavens were twinkling above us!) but we cannot, of course, guarantee it. You would still have the evening talk to enjoy on friday and we will show a space-themed film(!) on our big screen on the Sat evening if the skies do not clear. Hot drinks are made available all night, the log fire burning in our refuge. There will also be a more 'special' hot drink served on the Sat night. Our December 2015 Star Camp scored 21.4 on the dark ratings - come and see what a difference this makes to what is visible above your heads!

Places are limited to 50 people (approx 25 camping units) attending Star Camp. We usually sell-out. Attendence at stargazing event is for campers only. By all means phone the site (01434 220175) if you have any questions. Thank you!
