Water sports in Northumberland

Water sports
Dive with grey seals, stand up paddle board into the sunset, and row along rivers with Northumberland water sports. The incredible Northumberland coastline, lakes and rivers let you explore off-shore, and we have excellent providers offering equipment rental and lesson bookings.

A healthy dose of Vitamin Sea

Scale the North Sea on a surfboard, kayak past castles along our coastline, windsurf on the largest, man-made lake in the UK and canoe along rivers that wind through our market towns. The water sports in Northumberland are endless, and will add a little extra excitement to your trip.

Pick up a stand up paddle board, surf boards or wetsuits at one of our surf shops and explore the waters around the quiet bays and outstanding beaches of the Northumberland coast. If you need some guidance, you can book lessons for various water sports with the county’s excellent providers, such as sea kayaking, canoeing and paddle boarding.

Head out to the Farne Islands and go diving with grey seals (and maybe even dolphins) from this magical group of small islands and rocky outcrops. Various diving centres offer shallow and deep diving trips, as well as wildlife boat trips, for an unforgettable experience.

If you prefer to explore by boat, The Coquet Shorebase Trust in Amble provides water-based activities for all ages and abilities including canoeing, kayaking, raft building and powerboating. Or, row along one of our rivers; there are bookable experiences on the River Coquet, where you can go kayaking or canoeing past Warkworth Castle. Stretch your visit to an overnight stay for a night or two and find places to stay in Warkworth.

Venture onto our lakes at Kielder Water and Forest Park, where you can sail and waterski across the stunning Kielder water. Or visit Queen Elizabeth II Country Park, near Ashington, which is a great spot for windsurfers.

Want to try indoor water sports before you head out to one of Northumberland’s amazing outdoor water sports sites? Stay at Haggerston Castle Holiday Park and learn new water sports, or why not visit one of the many swimming and leisure centres Northumberland has to offer for a dip.
