The Official Visitor Site for Northumberland
Ford castle operating as a residential centre for young people throughout school term time. At weekends and school holidays it is available for adult group bookings, conference, weddings and event hire. Set in an area of outstanding natural beauty, Ford Castle is one of the most attractive residential centres in the country. The Castle's history is well documented dating back to the 14thC. King James IV of Scotland stayed at the castle before his fatal battle on Flodden Field in 1513. The castle stands in 5 acres of private grounds and gardens which offer a relaxing environment as well as opportunities for activities including ball games, croquet, problem solving and orienteering. The Cheviot Hills provide a spectacular scenic backdrop. The historic walled town of Berwick upon Tweed, the unspoilt coastline of Northumberland, Holy Island, Bamburgh and the Farne Islands are close by. The cities of Newcastle and Edinburgh are both an hour's drive away or easily reached by main line train from Berwick. The area offers excellent opportunities for walking, cycling, outdoor adventure activities, art and culture as well as curriculum based subjects. While steeped in history with many medieval, Gothic and Victorian features remaining, the castle's public rooms, lounge/bar and bedrooms have recently benefited from a major refurbishment. A licence has been granted to hold civil wedding ceremonies in bot the historic James Study and the Long Gallery offering flexibility on wedding party sizes and individual requirements. Catering arrangements can also be tailored to meet your needs from the traditional wedding breakfast to the informal evening reception buffet.
