The Official Visitor Site for Northumberland
A very warm welcome to Firwood from Mike and Beth Mills. We offer peace and tranquillity, a touch of style and luxury, with homely comforts and delicious breakfasts.
Firwood was built in the 1860's as a hunting lodge and retains many of its original features. Period fireplaces, (real fires in the cooler months) sash windows and lovely tiled entrance hall, combined with wide doorways, spacious rooms, all on the ground floor, and many other period touches, make this a real gem. Of course we do have all the mod cons of en-suite bedrooms, beverage trays, king-sized beds in the double rooms, hairdryers etc. The gardens with lawns, terraced beds, woodland and views, complement the house perfectly.
Firwood is in a beautiful, elevated and rural setting, on the border of the Northumberland National Park and backed by the Cheviot Hills. We are just outside the moorland town of Wooler, commonly known as the Gateway to the Cheviots. It is one of the few Northumbrian townships to retain many of its original shop frontages, indeed, the front street has not changed that much since the 1900's and it is still a bustling place with pubs, pottery and a good variety of shops selling everything from antiques to local meats, speciality foods from around the region and gifts. Wooler hosts its own yearly carnival, vintage vehicle shows and the Glendale Show, a must for everything countrified. The Pennine Cycle way comes through Wooler as does the long distance footpath of St.Cuthbert's Way.
In fact, it has been said, we are in a perfect location whether you want to walk or cycle the hills (leave the car at Firwood and walk into the Cheviots and on to the Cheviot itself), explore the magnificent Northumberland coastline, or visit the many castles, museums and gardens, Alnwick Water Gardens and Castle are only 17 miles away. We are also just a short drive from the Scottish Borders, or if you want to go further afield, Edinburgh and Newcastle Upon Tyne are both easily reached for a day visit.
Of course, you may just want to sit in our gardens after a full breakfast and contemplate the views and wildlife, perhaps amble along the country roads to Wooler, a very pleasant mile and a half away. Your choices are only limited by your time! Talking of breakfasts and ambling, we offer a choice of breakfast, from the Firwood Full, (egg, bacon, sausages, hash browns, mushrooms, tomato), to the Firwood Healthy, a fresh fruit salad with natural yoghurt-our own plums, apples and pears, season permitting, and a vegetarian option with vegetarian sausages, egg, hash brown, mushroom and tomato. Can you manage porridge to start with as well? Where possible we try to use local produce, ask us if you would like to try the local rare breed bacon or sausage (subject to availability)...not the usual fare!
Now to the amble if you can move after all that. We have a good selection of maps and books to help you plan your walk and we will always try to help with personal knowledge where we can. A packed lunch can be provided if ordered the night before. There are many walks from Firwood and the surrounding area, from easy but interesting strolls to the more arduous fells and hills. If you do happen to get caught in a passing shower, or fall into a stream while out walking, let us dry off your boots and clothes ready for your next venture.
Come, pay us a visit, see the area for yourself, make up your own mind. We look forward to meeting you.
