Sailing & Water Sports

A Windsurfer on Embleton BayNorthumberland is home to an unrivalled range of sailing and watersports activities along its spectacular 80-mile coast and on its sparkling inland lakes and rivers, providing some of the best locations and climate in Britain for sailing and windsurfing. It's also canoeing and kayaking territory and a popular destination for kitesurfing and adventure sports fans.

Waterskiing on Kielder WaterThe coastal castles and golden sands of Northumberland's uncrowded beaches make a spectacular backdrop for windsurfing, sea kayaking and sailing. Launch out from Northumberland's colourful and lively coastal towns and villages with safe anchorage spots for small craft and welcoming yacht clubs. The largest facilities can be found at Amble Marina with 270 berths to suit a variety of craft, whilst Blyth South Beach, Low Newton near Embleton, Beadnell Bay and Spittal Beach near Berwick are all easily accessed by road. Alternatively, head to the Farne Islands and dive in the company of grey seals. The Outer Farnes offer some of the best diving in the country, with abundant marine life and curious range of barnacled shipwrecks, sea sponges and swathes of 'dead men's fingers'.

Inland, situated just outside Northumberland National Park, are the pristine waters of Kielder Water & Forest Park, the largest man made lake in Northern Europe, partly surrounded by dense forest - the perfect countryside backdrop to any inland sailing and windsurfing experience with wonderfully stiff breezes. Waterskiing is also available. Queen Elizabeth II Country Park, situated next to Woodhorn in the South-East of the County is also a great spot for windsurfers.
