Northumberland is fast becoming one of Europe's most popular cycling destinations, and it's easy to see why. As well as having the cleanest air and the lowest population density in England, Northumberland boasts a large number of safe, signed routes through some truly beautiful landscapes.

For those with a young family, gentle day rides along traffic-free paths and country lanes can be found throughout the region. The 9-mile South Tyne Trail crosses the 110ft Lambley Viaduct as it meanders through the majestic woodland and meadows of the South Tyne valley.

Those interested in cycle tours will find plenty of challenging, yet rewarding long distance trails within Northumberland. The most popular are Hadrian's Cycleway and Coast & Castles Cycle Route, both of which take you past some of Northumberland's most iconic landmarks. For the more accomplished rider, the Reivers Cycle Route is a real gem as it bisects the region, although signage can be poor in places.

Mountain biking enthusiasts will no doubt be aware of the growing reputation of Kielder Water & Forest Park as one of England's premier MTB playgrounds, with the Deadwater Trails regarded as two of the best single track trails in the country. For the less adventurous, The North Pennines and Northumberland National Park are home to numerous bridleways suitable for all abilities.
