Hadrian's Wall & North Pennines region

What a combination! The natural beauty and splendour of the North Pennines coupled with the unique World Heritage Site that is Hadrian's Wall.

Head to the south of Northumberland and you can explore the ancient wonder of Hadrian's Wall and take in some fantastic views of the North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

It features tumbling waterfalls, sweeping moorland views, dramatic dales and vibrant villages like Allendale or Blanchland.

Animal species that are scarce in the rest of Britain thrive in the North Pennines and you may see red squirrels, otters, and black grouse as well as thousands of pairs of wading birds.

Hadrian's Wall is at its most spectacular at the western edge of Northumberland and some of its most famous sites, including Housesteads, Vindolanda and Steel Rigg are within walking distance of one another.

And don't make the mistake that the wall is just some isolated ruin. The fortification is dotted with milecastles, temples and fortresses as well as archeological sites that are still giving us a valuable insight into how the Romans lived almost 2,000 years ago.

Go to places like Vindolanda or Housesteads any weekend during the Summer months and you'll find people re-enacting battles in full costume or explaining how the Romans ate or washed.

It is a living breathing attraction and the impact of the people who built it still resonates across the area today.
