Visit Warkworth and you'll feel like you have stepped back in time.
The ancient and picturesque village of Warkworth, unspoilt by modern development, is built on a rocky spur within a tight loop of the River Coquet.
Its skyline is dominated by the magnificent Warkworth Castle, home to an impressive 15th century keep and courtyard – one of the finest preserved in the country. In spring the castle is surrounded by the vibrant colours of hundreds of golden daffodils.
A short walk from the castle and across the river is the Warkworth Hermitage. Carved out of rock, this tiny 14th Century chapel contains the remains of the hermit’s house, chapel, confessional and dormitory.
A 15-minute walk from the village takes you to the golf course and spectacular sandy beach which overlooks the RSPB reserve of Coquet Island.
Warkworth is no museum piece. The village has a vibrant community and an exceptional range of galleries, a post office, pubs, restaurants and gift shops to suit all tastes and pockets. There is a beautiful riverside walk near to the village and in summer you can hire a rowing boat or even a canoe.
Many of Northumberland’s attractions, including The Alnwick Garden, the Farne Islands, Holy Island of Lindisfarne and Cragside House, Gardens & Estate are within a short drive or cycle.
Warkworth is within the Northumberland Coast Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and is a stopping point on the Coast and Castles National Cycle Route and the St Oswald’s Way long distance walking route.
